Notes: Abstract A European project started at the end of 1992, in which, in addition to current methods, trained sensory panels were used to investigate office buildings all over Europe. The main aim of this EC-Audit was to develop assessment procedures and guidance on ventilation and source control, to help optimize energy use in buildings while assuring good indoor air quality. In each of nine countries, six or more office buildings were selected. Measurements were performed at five selected locations in each building. The buildings were studied while normally occupied and ventilated to identify the pollution sources in the spaces and to quantify the total pollution load caused by the occupants and their activities, as well as the ventilation systems. The investigation included physical and chemical measurements, assessment of the perceived air quality in the spaces by a trained sensory panel, and measurement of the outdoor air supply to the spaces. A questionnaire for evaluating retrospective and immediate symptoms and perceptions was given to the occupants of the buildings. The building characteristics were described by use of a check-list. The annual energy consumption of the buildings and the weather conditions were registered. This paper presents results and conclusions of the audit in 56 buildings in Europe. However, the analysis and discussions of the results are a summary of the work done, and are focused mainly on comparison between sensory assessments and the other measurements performed.Furthermore, this paper brings the results of the study based on a two-factor analysis. A paper dealing with results on a multifactorial analysis is in preparation.

Abstract: Summary A method for the determination of aldehydes involving the formation of their 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones on solid adsorbents and subsequent HPLC/UV analysis with internal standard was tested with dynamically generated samples and applied in a few real situations. The sampling train is suitable for personal sampling.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A network of samplers was installed near a refuse incinerator in an alpine valley. Only a weak contribution of cadmium and zinc to an already low level was observed. The use of a movie camera pointing to the stack evidenced that close to ground wind measurements would not allow reliable flow pattern predictions, even in this seemingly linear topography.

Notes: Summary Various combinations of hi-vol samplers, size-selective inlet and two cascade impactors were tested near a highway. The Sierra 235 cascade slot impactor yielded low total dust values and very small apparent aerodynamic diameters. Sampling with the size selective inlet was found to correlate satisfactorily with hi-vol data. The effect of humidity on the mass of field collected dust is also discussed.

Notes: The kinetics of the base catalysed racemization of [Co(EN3A)H2O]Abbreviations: EN3A3-=(-OOCCH2)2N(CH2)2NHCH2COO-; ME3A3-=(-OOCCH2)2N(CH2)2 N(CH3)CH2COO-; EDDA2-=-OOCCH2NH(CH2)2NHCH2COO-; EDTA4-=(-OOCCH2)2N(CH2)2N(CH2COO-)2;TNTA4-=(-OOCCH2)2N(CH2)3N(CH3COO-)2; HETA3-=(-OOCCH2)2N(CH2)2N(CH2COO-)CH2CH2OH; en=H2N(CH2)2NH2; Meen=H2N(CH2)2NHCH3; sar-=-OOCCH2NHCH3. were studied polarimetrically in aqueous buffer solution. The reaction rate is first order in OH- and in complex, in weakly acidic medium. Activation parameters are ΔH≠=22 kcal · mol-1, ΔS≠=26 cal · K-1. The results are discussed in terms of an SN1CB mechanism involving exchange of the ligand water molecule. The N-methylated analogue [Co(ME3A)H2O] does not racemize in the pH-range investigated. Loss of optical activity occurs at a rate which is about 1,000 times slower than the racemization of [Co(EN3A)H2O](60°) and coincides with the decomposition of the complex.
