Notes: Heavy ion beam inertial fusion driver concepts depend on the availability and performance of high-brightness high-current ion sources. Surface ionization sources have relatively low current density but high brightness because of the low temperature of the emitted ions. We have measured the beam profiles at the exit of the injector diode, and compared the measured profiles with EGUN and WARP-3D predictions. Spherical aberrations are significant in this large aspect ratio diode. We discuss the measured and calculated beam size and beam profiles, the effect of aberrations, quality of vacuum, and secondary electron distributions on the beam profile. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Single-pulse and noncollinear double-pulse channels formed by intense relativistic electron beams were studied by using a laser deflection probe for times up to 100 ms. The first of two pulsed electron beams propagating in a 30-cm-diam tube was magnetically deflected to generate an off-axis neutral-density channel of ∼40% depth in moist air at 250 Torr. Subsequently after a time delay of 1.36 ms, a similar electron beam pulse (1.2 MeV, 13 kA, 10 ns full width at half maximum) was injected along the tube axis. After injection of the second pulse, the rate of channel decay was enhanced, and a large-scale convective motion of the hot channel gas toward the second pulse ensued. Measurements of the channel motion are compared with the predictions of a simple hydrodynamic model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The radial profile of a reduced density channel in air produced by a double pulsed electron beam has been measured by use of a simple laser deflection technique, sensitive to density changes of 1016 cm−3 in air. Measurements indicate a pressure dependence in channel depth and in the relationship between beam and channel profiles. Measured channel and shock wave behaviors agree with predictions of a one-dimensional hydrodynamics code. Channel decay rates were negligible for times t〈1 ms.

Notes: The total abundance of secondary ion current detected from a heavy ion beam probe (proportional to nσeff ) is a function of the electron temperature through the collision cross section. n and Te can be separated by probing the same volume with two different ion species or monitoring two different charge states produced from the same ion. Measurements at Rensselaer (RENTOR) have demonstrated the technique by using a single detector system to look at Cs++ and Cs+++ on successive plasma shots. Data from EBT-S has shown a sensitivity to electron energies up to 1 MeV, but accurate determination of bulk temperatures is limited to a few hundred volts. Two new analyzers have been installed on RENTOR to demonstrate the capability of providing Te profiles during a single shot. Calibration of these measurements requires a detailed accounting of all input beam ions, reaction products, and sample volumes.

Notes: This article discusses improvements in the efficiency, output power, and operational flexibility of MEDEA II, a double-pulse electron beam accelerator at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories. A modified charging circuit, based on the triple-resonance pulse transformer concept, was implemented on both of MEDEA II's two stages. The output switches were modified to increase maximum output voltages, and a new, second output switch with asymmetric breakdown characteristics was developed. To avoid degradation of the second-pulse output waveform at the diode, a keep-alive circuit was installed. The effects of diode closure on double-pulse operation are also discussed.

Notes: A modified, resonant pulse transformer circuit, based on a generalization of the well-known double-resonance pulse transformer circuit, is described. This modified circuit allows complete energy transfer in the presence of non-negligible internal capacitance of realistic pulse transformers, and substantially reduces peak transformer voltage, compared to the double-resonance circuit. Conditions under which the internal capacitance significantly affects energy transfer, and sensitivity of overall efficiency to circuit component values are discussed.

Notes: Heavy ion fusion (HIF) drivers require large currents and bright beams. In this article we review the two different approaches for building HIF injectors and the corresponding ion source requirements. The traditional approach uses large aperture, low current density ion sources, resulting in a very large injector system. A more recent approach merges high current density mini-beamlets into a large current beam and significantly reduces the injector size. Experiments are being prepared to demonstrate this approach. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Kapton film is used to image K+ ion beams in the 0.4 to 2 MeV energy range. Dose response is shown to be linear and to follow a simple model for a range of exposures. The measured profiles agree with profiles obtained with a slit scanner. Kapton has excellent spatial resolution, dynamic range, and discrimination against stray low energy and low mass particles. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
