    Notes: Summary Tumors of mixed glial origin may present as low-grade neoplasms with distinct cell populations or as polymorphic malignant gliomas. Such cell populations are usually appropriate to the location of the tumor. A mixed tumor, with a cell population inappropriate to tumor location, is presented to discuss theories of glial differentiation and cellular heterogeneity. This mixed ependymoma-astrocytoma of the parietal cortex, ultrastructurally similar to subependymoma but anatomically separate from the subependymal cell matrix or ventricular surface, gives evidence for neoplastic differentiation into ependymal and astrocytic cell lines. This supports the idea of a common progenitor cell, the ependymoglia or tanycyte, in human cerebral cortex.

    Notes: Abstract Hypothalamic gangliocytomas have been shown to contain immunoreactivity for hypophysiotropic peptides and some have been associated with endocrine dysfunction. Extrahypothalamic gangliocytomas are usually not associated with endocrine abnormalities. We studied nine cerebral or cerebellar gangliocytomas from six men and three women; none of the patients had detectable alterations of endocrine homeostasis. On histological examination, the tumor cells resembled hypothalamic neurons. Electron microscopy disclosed the presence of dense-core vesicles in neuronal cytoplasm and processes resembling Herring bodies, and there were synaptic contacts between tumor cells. All but two tumors contained immunocytochemical positivity for at least one peptide hormone or amine; these included somatostatin, corticotropin-releasing hormone, β-endorphin, galanin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, calcitonin, serotonin, catecholamines or met-enkephalin. These tumors have been thought to represent neoplasms arising in ectopic autonomic neural tissue. Their morphological features, their similarity to hypothalamic gangliocytomas and the multiple immunoreactivities shown here suggest that they can be regarded as tumors of peptidergic neurons that are widely distributed throughout the central nervous system.

    Notes: Summary To identify keratin, the immunoperoxidase technique was performed on 41 nontumourous pituitaries, 14 pituitary adenomas composed of different cell types and 15 craniopharyngiomas. No keratin was demonstrated in adenohypophysial cells, neurohypophysis or hypophysial vessels, however, it was occasionally identified in the pars intermedia within cells lining cystic structures. Crooke's hyaline material and all pituitary adenomas were negative for keratin. The epithelial portions of craniopharyngiomas exhibited positive keratin immunostaining, as did squamous cell nests, which are frequently found in the hypophysial stalk. Immunostaining for keratin can effectively be used in the differential diagnosis of pituitary tumours and may prove valuable in the investigation of histogenesis and embryology.

    Notes: Summary A light and electron microscopic study was undertaken on 3 surgically removed non-tumorous adenohypophyses and 16 pituitary adenomas. Numerous oncocytes have been found in 2 non-tumorous adenohypophyses and in 6 pituitary adenomas including 1 chromophobe adenoma which was composed almost exclusively of oncocytes. Thus, it seems that the occurrence of oncocytes in the anterior pituitary cannot be considered a rare finding. The distinctive feature of oncocytes is the abundance of mitochondria in their cytoplasm. This alteration can be so extensive that the entire cytoplasm is filled with mitochondria leaving only a small area for the remaining cytoplasmic organelles. Oncocytes arise from adenohypophysial cells. This transformation is gradual and is not restricted to one particular cell type. In the early phases of development of oncocytes the secretory granules are well preserved. Thus, hormone secretion is presumably maintained. It seems conceivable, however, that in the more advanced phases of evolution of oncocytes, when the secretory granules decrease in number, hormone production is diminished or stopped. Further investigations are, however, required to elucidate in detail the functional activity of oncocytes. It remains to be established whether mitochondrial accumulation is principally due to increased formation or delayed breakdown. As some mitochondria show signs indicating division it appears that multiplication of mitochondria is the underlying mechanism resulting in their significant increase. However, the possibility cannot be excluded that the life span of mitochondria is prolonged and mitochondrial longevity plays an important role in causing transformation of adenohypophysiocytes into oncocytes.

    Notes: Abstract. In this paper, we study the position value for games in which partial cooperation exist, that is based on a union stable coalition system. The concept of basis is introduced for these systems, allowing for a definition of the position value. Moreover, an axiomatic characterization of the position value is provided for a specific class of union stable systems. Conditions under which convexity is inherited from the underlying game to the conference game, and the position value is a core vector of the restricted game are provided.
