Notes: Abstract Thin Li3±xPO4±yNzLi+- electrolyte films prepared by reactive rf-magnetron sputtering of Li3PO4 incorporate a certain amount of nitrogen which is made responsible for increased Li+-conductivity as well as at least kinetic stability with lithium metal. A possible change of the oxidation state +5 of phosphorus as a result of the sputter process has not yet been considered for explanation. We have found out that it cannot be generally assumed that reactive low power rf-magnetron sputtering of Li3PO4 results in fully oxidized films, even when pure O2 is employed as sputtering gas. Our films immediately react with H2O releasing a garlic smelling gas. The reaction area is surrounded by a white crust afterwards. CuSO4 and AgNO3 aqueous solutions become reduced. Impedance measurements yield an ionic conductivity of 2·10−6 S/cm at 25 °C and an activation energy of 0.62 eV.

Notes: Abstract A thin film solid state electrochemical gas sensor has been investigated for CO2 detection based on the cell reaction: Na++OH+CO2=NaHCO3. The galvanic cell arrangement is Au | NaxCoO2−δ (ref.) | NASICON | Au, SnO2 where the right hand electrode is in contact with CO2 and O2 in a humid atmosphere. The response has been compared to results obtained with a conventional pellet type sensor. Furthermore, both devices have been exposed to CO and humidity. Strong cross-sensitivities were observed leading to large changes in the emf in both cases. The response to moisture is reversible and fast with a response time of about 1 min according to a fast surface reaction of H2O with SnO2. The presence of CO leads to a signal change with a high response time and a very slow reverse reaction. However, the response to CO2 is not influenced by the presence of CO or H2O with regard to the signal height and response time.

Notes: Abstract Thin rf-sputtered films of Li4Fe0.5±xTi4.5±yO11.75±z, Li4Co0.5±xTi4.5±yO11.5±z, Li4Ti5±xO12±y, LiCo1±xO2±y and C were investigated by X-ray diffraction, thickness and weight determination, ICP/AAS, EDX and coulometric titration experiments employing the following liquid electrolytes (PC:EC:DMC=1:1:3, 1 M LiPF6), (PC:DEC=1:4, 1 M LiPF6), (EC:DMC=1:1, 1 M LiPF6), (PC:DME=1:1, 1 M LiClO4) and (γ-buthyrolactone, 1M LiClO4). For comparison, cold isostatically pressed monolithic pellets of Li4Fe0.5Ti4.5O11.75, Li4Co0.5Ti4.5O11.5 and Li4Ti5O12 were examined. The slope of the coulometric titration curves depends strongly on the employed liquid electrolyte. In the case of thin films, the stoichiometric width of the liquid electrolyte salt may have an additional impact on the results.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical performance of ion conducting thin films depends strongly on the deposition method. This provides a possibility of tailoring thin films with new functional properties. A comparative study was made between rf-sputtering and electron beam evaporation which are the two most commonly employed methods for the preparation of thin films. For this purpose, thin films of Li3±xPO4±yNz were rf-sputtered and electron beam evaporated and investigated with regard to the electrochemical properties. It was found that solid thin films of the electrolyte Li3±xPO4±yNz may be sputtered, but not electron beam evaporated. Compared to rf-sputtered Li1±xCoO2±y and C thin films, electron beam evaporated Li1±xCoO2±y and C thin films show chemical diffusion coefficients which are at least one order of magnitude higher.

Description / Table of Contents: A Contribution to Catalysts for the Aromatizing of EthyleneA series of monometallic, bimetallic, and trimetallic catalysts (with alumina as carrier) has been tested in the aromatizing of ethylene. The results are correlated with the composition and the metal dispersion of the catalysts. The catalytic activity is compared with the behaviour of the respective catalysts in other hydrocarbon reactions.

Description / Table of Contents: Solid State Reactions in Catalysts and Components of Catalysts. VI. Investigations on Pt/γ-Al2O3 Catalysts Modified by ChlorineThe influence of tetrachloromethane and trichloromethane in an oxidizing atmosphere on the solid state behaviour of Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts has been investigated. The samples were characterized by means of several methods: Determination of the total content regarding chlorine and platinum, CO chemisorption capacity, content of oxidized platinum and densitometric investigations, resp. The treatment of the catalysts with the cited substances leads partly to drastic changes in the mentioned parameters. This fact again influences the catalytic properties of such samples in the conversion of hydrocarbons.
