Notes: [Auszug] IN the light of the standard measurements of the β-ray spectra of radium-B and -C by Ellis and Skinner (Roy. Soc. Proc., A, vol. 105, p. 60, 1924) it was thought advisable to remeasure the spectra of thorium-B, -C, and -D. This has been done, using the now well-known focussing method, and the ...

Notes: [Auszug] A SATISFACTORY explanation of the decrease of liquid viscosity with temperature has long been required, and Prof. Andrade's theoretical treatment of the subject will be awaited with interest. His simple formula connecting viscosity and temperature appears to give good agreement for certain liquids, ...

Notes: Summary Several SA8 isolates obtained from baboons were compared to the prototype SA8 herpesvirus of African green monkeys. SDS-PAGE and restriction enzyme analyses revealed definite differences between green monkey and baboon isolates. DNA and amino acid sequences of the gB, gD and gJ glycoprotein genes exhibited substantial differences in variable regions. For the gB and gD, the amount of amino acid substitutions between SA8 and the baboon viruses was comparable to levels observed between analogous genes of SA8 & B virus or HSV1 & HSV2. Although a high degree of antigenic cross-reactivity was apparent, virus-specific antigenic determinants were also readily detected. Phylogenetic analyses supported separation of the baboon isolates and SA8 as distinct viruses. Taken together these results suggest that although closely related to SA8, the baboon viruses represent a distinct simian α-herpesvirus which we propose be designated Herpesvirus papio 2.

Notes: Summary Twelve Brahman (Bos indicus) and 36 Holstein (Bos taurus) calves in Trinidad were fed on an amount of milk substitute equivalent to either 10 or 20% of their body weight each day. The diets contained either 10, 20 or 30% added fat. Nutrient balances were studied for 21 days. The liveweight gains of the calves depended on the quantity of milk fed and the breed of calf (Holstein〉Brahman) but were independent of fat level. The Brahman calves were reluctant to accept milk substitute from a bucket. The digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen and fat was slightly higher for the Holstein than for the Brahman calves but there was little difference between the ME requirements for the 2 breeds.

Notes: Abstract Gills were examined in Littorina saxatilis, L. arcana and L. neglecta, using animals of similar size. The form of the gills in the three groups is very similar, although there is an indication of qualitative differences between them. The relationship of number of gill lamellae to shell length shows that L. saxatilis and L. arcana share the same allometric relationship, while in L. neglecta the slope is the same but the intercept is less: at equivalent shell sizes, these animals have about three fewer lamellae.
