Notes: The effects of N and K fertilizers on the yield and chemical composition of herbage and the serum Mg and Ca levels of grazing ruminants were investigated, using 64 lactaling ewes in a 4x4 Latin square arrangement of plots. During the 2-year experiment there was no evidence that application of N alone has a depressing effect on the Mg content of either herbage or blood serum. The sheep grazing plots treated with combined N and K fertilizer had significantly (P〈0·01) lower serum Mg levels during the early spring grazing period of 1961. It is suggested that individual variability within a group of animals may considerably influence the results of investigations of this kind.

Notes: The parasite-control value of keeping Nematodirus-infested pasture free from susceptible lambs for a complete year was examined in a controlled experiment. The practice was shown to be successful and confirmed previous recommendations, based on a knowledge of the parasite's life cycleThe detrimental quality of Nematodirus infestation was measurable by mortalities, depression of weight gains and the quality of the lambs. In the conditions of the experiment, the effects of Nematodiriasis approximately halved the liveweight production of affected animals.

Notes: S23 and S24 Lolium perenne and S37 and S143 Dactylis glomerata were cut to heights of 1 1/2 and 4 1/2 in. in a replicated experiment, using: a flail harvester, a reciprocating mower, and a reciprocating mower followed by a flail harvester to collect the wilted grass. At the short cutting height there was a marked depression of regrowth of all grasses following the use of the flail harvester (P〈0.01), compared with the other mowing treatments. No such effect was observed at the higher level of cutting. Close cutting with a flail forage harvester was shown to be detrimental to regrowth, but the reasons for this effect are not clear.
