    Notes: Abstract An 8-year-old boy with a short gut had six episodes of metabolic acidosis and neurological dysfunction over a 1 month period. The neurological features consisted of a depressed conscious state, confusion, aggressive behaviour, slurred speech and ataxia. The organic acid profile of urine demonstrated increased amounts of lactic, 3-hydroxypropionic, 3-hydroxyisobutyric, 2-hydroxyisocaproic, phenyllactic, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic and 4-hydroxyphenyllactic acids. Of the lactic acid 99% was d-lactic acid. The anaerobic gut flora consisted almost entirely of Lactobacilli in unusually large numbers. A course of vancomycin prevented further episodes. A urinary organic acid profile may be diagnostic when a person with a short gut develops metabolic acidosis or an unusual encephalopathy and bacterial metabolites should be considered in other patients with unusual combinations of organic acids in the urine.

    Notes: Abstract The active region McMath 10433 was the source of several flares and radio outbursts during the early part of July 1974. This region was tracked continuously, for several periods during the month at 22.2 GHz using a telescope with a 4′ beam. Comparison with the results obtained simultaneously with a normal 7 GHz solar patrol instrument indicate that there is important burst activity occurring at levels below the detection limit of normal solar patrol instruments. The time-development morphology of these bursts is similar to those normally observed and has enabled the simple events to be re-interpreted. A completely new type of event - the fast absorption - has also been recognized. The correlation of the microwave events with SPA events observed on VLF propagation is also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of McMath region 10433 at 22 GHz using a telescope with a 4′ beam during July 1974 revealed the existence events or ‘microbursts’ with intensities below the sensitivity limit of normal solar patrol instruments. Many of these events were simply the high frequency counterpart of more intense bursts observed at lower frequencies. This note considers the small number of events which suggest that the gyro-synchrotron mechanism alone is incapable of explaining the observations and indicates that a thermal mechanism is needed to explain the high frequency event.
