Notes: Individual differences in stages 3 and 4 sleep are usually unrecognized., although several reports have mentioned large inter-individual variation of the stages within a restricted age range. This study investigated individual differences and nightly reliability in stages 3 and 4 sleep in a homogeneous sample of 34 young adult males. Sleep was analyzed from the final two of three consecutive lab nights. Results indicated that stage 4 steep was an exceedingly prominent individual difference. Stage 4 occupied 7.9 to 50.0 percent of the first 3 hrs after sleep onset and was highly reliable across nights (.78). Individual differences were less pronounced in the second 3 hrs after sleep onset. Stage 3 and stage 4 were reliably distinguished. Persons high in one of these stages had relatively little of the other. Combining stage 3 and stage 4 may be a reasonable strategy if visually scored delta activity per se is of interest, bat it may obscure potentially meaningful individual differences in which state is characteristically achieved.

Notes: Objective: This study investigates the relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and denture use. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of community-dwelling older adults. Information about denture use was obtained using a questionnaire. Ambulatory sleep recording in subjects' homes was performed using Embletta PDS (Medcare, Iceland). Chi-square tests and logistic regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 58 subjects completed the study. The mean apnea hypopnea (AHI) index was 15.1 ± 16.1. Twenty-two subjects (38%) used dentures and most removed them before sleep. There was significant association between denture use and AHI ≥ 15 per hour of sleep (odds ratio [OR]/6.29; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.71, 23.22; P=.006). Conclusions: This preliminary study found an association between sleep-disordered breathing and denture use, which may represent a proxy for a relationship between sleep-disordered breathing and edentulism. Given the common occurrence of both conditions among older adults, the observed relationship warrants a more detailed investigation of the mechanisms whereby loss of teeth leads to upper airway closure during sleep.

Notes: Abstract Twenty-five Vietnam combat veterans with chronic severe posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) completed a sleep self-report questionnaire on admission to an inpatient treatment program. Between 1 and 2 months later each spent 3 or more nights in the sleep laboratory. When self-report and laboratory findings were compared, significant relationships were observed between sleep schedule items such as time-to-bed/time-out-of-bed and polysomnographic measures of sleep. In contrast, global ratings of sleep quality were generally unrelated to polysomnographic measures. These findings may have implications for survey research assessing sleep quality in traumatized populations.
