Conclusions 1. The character of the deformation of a sandy bed is determined by the allowable strain level during its loading. 2. Various mechanisms of the deformation of a sandy bed correspond to small and finite strains. 3. Local plastic flow, which does not lead to general loss of bed stability is observed with small deformations. Loss of stability by the bed is accompanied by the significant development of shear and bulk tensile strains.
