Description / Table of Contents: The Reaction of α-Benzoylbenzyl Cyanide with 1.1-Disubstituted HydrazinesThe reaction of α-benzoylbenzyl cyanide (1) with 1.1-disubstituted hydrazines (2) yielded the corresponding hydrazone only in the case of 1-methyl-1-phenylhydrazine (2k). In the case of nine other hydrazines the reaction resulted in the elimination of one substituent and formation of 5-amino-1-alkyl-3.4-diphenylpyrazoles (3). The eliminated alkyl group is found either as a quaternary hydrazinium ion (N → N-transalkylation) or as an alkyl derivative of α-benzoyl-benzyl cyanide (N → O- and N → C-transalkylation). In the case of hydrazines with mixed substitution it is shown that the alkyl groups are split off at different rates.
