    Notes: Surface resistance measurements of films of YBa2Cu3O7 deposited onto single-crystal substrates of LaGaO3 and SrTiO3 have been made at a frequency of 22 GHz. The measurements were made in either a copper or niobium cavity by replacing the end wall with the superconducting film. Typical surface resistance at 20 K are 1–2 mΩ for films on LaGaO3 and 6–8 mΩ for films on SrTiO3, as measured in the copper cavity. The LaGaO3 values lie within the sensitivity range of the Cu cavity (∼2 mΩ) and can only be considered upper limits. Similar measurements in a Nb superconducting cavity resulted in a surface resistance value of 0.2±0.1 mΩ at 4 K for the best LaGaO3-based film. This value is more than an order of magnitude lower than Cu, and suggests that LaGaO3-based films may offer immediate advantages in a number of applications.

    Notes: The texture influence on the mechanical behavior during uniaxial tension was studied in AZ31 (Mg – 3 Al – 1 Zn in wt.%), one of the common wrought Mg alloys. Since three tensile samples were cut in 0°, 45°, 90° to the extrusion direction, the initial bar texture influences on the mechanical behavior differently. In-situ texture measurements were carried out using hard X-rays under loading condition. According to the initial texture loading results in a variation of the mechanical behavior (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and strain hardening rate) and in different final textures. The different texture development in each sample relates directly to the activation of different deformation systems, which is strongly influenced by the initial texture

    Notes: Abstract A theory is developed, based on theoretical-group analysis, to describe the linear, reversible, time-dependent response of an icosahedral quasicrystal, containing point defects, to a stress field and known as anelastic relaxation. We obtain also anelastic relaxation relationships for the practical Young’s, shear and Poisson’s moduli.

    Notes: Abstract Data on Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio obtained in AISI-1080 steel, in the temperature region between about 300 and 600 K, are presented. The measurements have been performed in longitudinal excitation and several harmonics were used, to obtain Poisson's ratio from the measured resonant frequencies. The maximum observed in the temperature dependence of Young's modulus, for the fundamental resonant frequency, is attributed to a stress-induced disordering of carbon atoms in the octahedral interstices of the martensitic matrix. The increases of Young's modulus with temperature are described in terms of expressions deduced in the paper, which are based on Landau theory of second-order phase transitions. The critical temperature is related to theM s temperature which characterizes the martensitic phase transition. Finally, the temperature dependence of Poisson's ratio is described in terms of a theory of anelastic behaviour under multiaxial strains, based on the standard anelastic solid model.

    Notes: Abstract A theory of anelasticity is presented, where the relaxation of all the elastic compliances, as a function of orientation, is considered. The theory is developed for cubic and hexagonal crystals. It is shown that, in addition to the usual relaxations of Young's and shear moduli, anelastic phenomena related to the relaxation of Poisson's should be considered, and, an energetic interpretation of the phase lags obtained is given. Finally, some point defect symmetries and particular orientations are considered, as special situations of the general formalism presented.

    Notes: Abstract Data on Poisson's ratio as a function of temperature, obtained in rods and tubes of Zircaloy-4 through dynamical measurements in longitudinal excitations, are presented. The influence of texture and the contribution of a coupling between longitudinal and transversal vibrations on the observed temperature dependence of this elastic constant, is discussed. Finally, an anelastic effect produced by relaxation of Poisson's ratio, in the temperature region between 400 and 450 K, is also presented. This effect is present only in tubular specimens and it is discussed in terms of a theory of anelastic relaxation under multiaxial strains.
