Notes: Histamine is a potent secretagogue for opioid pentapeptides (Met- and Leu-enkephalin) in adrenal chromaffin cells in vitro. This effect is dependent on extracellular Ca2+ and is reduced by Ca2+ channel blockers such as Co2+, D 600, and nifedipine. Moreover, histamine also produced a profound compensatory increase in cellular peptide content after 48 h of exposure, most likely caused by a four- to fivefold increase in the mRNA levels coding for the proenkephalin A precursor. All the histamine-in-duced effects (acute release, changes in peptide cell content, proenkephalin A mRNA levels) are antagonized by the H1-receptor antagonist, clemastine, whereas the H2-receptor antagonists, ranitidine and cimetidine, were less effective (∼20% inhibition).

Notes: Downsizings, re-engineering, and restructuring continue to be strategic initiatives employed by the management of US companies. Although the lay-offs that result from these activities have yielded some short-term benefits for companies, over the long term, the ability of the firm to innovate new products and processes may be compromised. In this article four antecedent variables of individual innovation are identified: a willingness to take risks, a willingness to make suggestions, the degree to which one is motivated by the job, and the degree to which one is motivated by fear. A model is developed and hypotheses proposed to test the effect of the threat of downsizings on these four factors. The results of our study revealed that these threats have a significant effect on all four factors in a direction which is detrimental to the propensity of R&D professionals to be innovative. The article concludes with suggestions for R&D managers in a downsizing environment to foster the innovation process at the individual level.

Notes: Competition in the beverage industry is increasing on all fronts (advertising, price, product proliferation, service, etc.). As a result, distributors need to understand what is important to retailers and assess how they and their competitors are meeting those needs in the supply chain. In this paper a performance system is proposed to assess the distributor-retailer interface based on the integration of a number of concepts including customer service, relationship exchanges, competitive benchmarking, order winners (consumer preference perceptions), and portfolio analysis.Various performance matrices are constructed which indicate the importance level and service effectiveness for categories of service provided to retailers. These importance/ performance matrices provide a basis for distributors to develop marketing strategies for categories of retailers, as well as for individual retailers.

Notes: This study examined the climate for innovation and creativity, and related outcome measures, in 31 Canadian and 11 US small– and medium–sized enterprises (SMEs), as assessed by 120 R&D engineers in those firms. Prior studies on the innovativeness of countries have been critical of Canadian firms compared to those in other industrialized countries. Our study tested whether differences existed between perceived climates, creativity and productivity of US and Canadian SMEs. The results indicated that the innovative climates and the perceptions of creativity and productivity of US and Canadian firms are very similar. Furthermore, the most important factors relating to creativity (Challenging Work and Organizational Encouragement) were the same for both the USA and Canada. Our conclusion is that support for innovation in Canadian SMEs is comparable with that of US SMEs. Differences in innovation measured at the national level can probably be attributed to other factors, such as industry structure and the degree of innovation in large firms.

Notes: Abstract A model is developed which identifies and describes various factors which affect ethical and unethical behavior in organizations, including a decision-maker's social, government and legal, work, professional and personal environments. The effect of individual decision maker attributes on the decision process is also discussed. The model links these influences with ethical and unethical behavior via the mediating structure of the individual's decision-making process.

Notes: Abstract A plan for developing an information system that provides a basis for improved decision making and planning at all levels in a child abuse and neglect service system is offered. The goal attainment scaling method (GAS) is suggested as a means for assisting the client and social worker in identifying needs and in developing a treatment plan for meeting these needs. The proposed information system is outlined using the goal attainment scaling instrument as the basic informational unit.
