A study of alkane degradation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been carried out over the last twelve years in the author's laboratory. This study has been aimed at the detailed characterization of the enzymes involved in alkane oxidation to fatty acids, alkane hydroxylase, alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase. Here are summarized the main results of this study and described with some more detail the points which have not yet been reported. Some general conclusions which can be drawn from the evidence obtained are presented.
