    Notes: The TRACE Observatory is the first solar-observing satellite in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Small Explorer series. Launched April 2, 1998, it is providing views of the solar transition region and low corona with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. The corona is now seen to be highly filamented, and filled with flows and other dynamic processes. Structure is seen down to the resolution limit of the instrument, while variability and motions are observed at all spatial locations in the solar atmosphere, and on very short time scales. Flares and shock waves are observed, and the formation of long-lived coronal structures, with consequent implications for coronal heating models, has been seen. This overview describes the instrument and presents some preliminary results from the first six months of operation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract A basic issue in the planning of urban public transport is the determination of headways or inter-dispatch times. During each season, i.e. distinct time-period whose demand characteristics are constant, the following tradeoff must be considered. Dispatching too many vehicles on a route causes high operating costs, while too few vehicles may result in unsatisfactory levels of service. An appropriate policy on headways will help to balance resources between lines (routes) in peak-demand hours and will influence the total number of buses acquired by a transit company. Previous practice in industry usually bases the planning of headways upon satisfying service criteria on a “most-congested segment”. This approach reduces the problem from that of studying a route to that of a single segment (stop), but thereby fails to account for other important information about the line's characteristics. In this article, we develop two new service criteria which consider the line as a whole: (1) “crowding-over-distance” takes into account discomfort resulting from a vehicle carrying too many passengers, and the corresponding distance travelled; and (2) “probability-of-failure”, the frequency with which a waiting passenger fails to board due to lack of space. COD will be analyzed using simulation. POF will be related to a time-dependent Markov chain that is “inhomogeneous” in terms of distance along the route. Optimal headways are those which dispatch the smallest number of buses while meeting the particular service criterion. Models based on each of the two criteria are illustrated and applied to a number of routes of the Israeli transit company, DAN.

    Notes: Abstract The dynamic spectrum, a three dimensional record of the radio intensity as a function both of time and frequency, has long been used as a probe of plasma processes in the solar corona. Beginning with the work of Wild and McCready (1950) dynamic spectroscopy has been used to distinguish between the multitude of radio wave emitting phenomena which occur in the solar corona and to infer the physical mechanisms responsible. Stellar dynamic spectroscopy has always been a tantalizing prospect. The vast body of experience with solar dynamic spectroscopy would prove invaluable in interpreting stellar dynamic spectra. Further, the new parameter regimes presented by stellar coronas would allow further insight to be gained in the physical processes at work in stellar coronas. Recently, Bastian and Bookbinder (1987) used the Very Large Array The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is operated by Associated Universities, Inc. under contract with the National Science Foundation. in spectral line mode at 1.4 GHz with a bandwidth of 50 MHz to obtain the first dynamic spectra of nearby flare stars. The spectral resolution was 3.125 MHz and the temporal resolution was 5 s. While the relative bandwidth was less than ideal (δν/ν ∼ 5%), the spectra so obtained were sufficient to show the presence of narrowband structure in a radio outburst from the well-known dMe flare star UV Ceti. Several efforts are now underway to obtain stellar dynamic spectra, of both RS CVn binaries and dMe flare stars, with higher degrees of spectral and temporal resolution. Among these are use of a 1024 channel correlator with the 1000' telescope at Arecibo and use of the Berkeley Fast Pulsar Search Machine (Kulkarni et al. 1984) with the Green Bank 140' telescope.

    Notes: Abstract Industrial Development has tended to be oriented to the attraction of manufacturing facilities. This paper discusses the trend towards service industries in the North American Economy, and the potential impact of developing office industries on a local economy. The literature on office location theory is reviewed and the results of the literature review are related to decentralization of offices to a planned new town near Metropolitan Toronto. The results of a survey of Toronto offices is presented and the results compared to that of the literature. Policy recommendations are proposed for the new town to attract office developments.

    Notes: Abstract We report the first millimetric detections of the magnetic cataclysmic variable AE Aquarii, accompanied by contemporaneous microwave observations. These data show that the time-averaged spectrum is well fit by a power-law which extends to mm wavelengths. We suggest that the spectrum is consistent with that expected from a superposition of flare-like events.
