Notes: Abstract A sensitive measure for the different spread of quark and gluon jets is proposed. It is based on minimization of suitable sums over energy weighted squares of trigonometric functions. A quantitative estimate predicts a 24% effect which should be observable at present energies.

Notes: Abstract The axes which diagonalize the symmetric part of the hadronic tensor allow the most effective analysis of the angular distribution of final states ine + e − annihilation. Forq $$\bar q$$ g-initiated three-jet events, disregarding small effects, the angular dependence can be described with a single parameter α D . The only slightly model dependent ‘diagonal’ axes can be satisfactorily approximated by the infrared-save and cluster-insensitive spheriocity axes.

Notes: Abstract The effect of multiple ‘chain’ contributions to particle production, which appears in the Dual Parton Model at collider energies, is investigated in an exploratory model, in which other sources of correlations are largely neglected. Attention is given to the question of KNO scaling for the multiplicities observed in restricted or unrestricted rapidity ranges. The rapidity distribution associated with a fixed number of particles within a suitably chosen interval, is found to be sensitive to details of the mechanism of multiple chain production.

Notes: Abstract Models which contain a semihard component sensitively depend on the smallx region of the structure functions. Within the framework of a two component dual parton model the effect of recently proposed steeper structure functions is investigated. Drastic changes which appear in the bare scattering amplitudes get significantly reduced by unitarization. For presently available energies the semihard component seems still too small to allow for clear cut conclusions about the correctness of the various proposed structure functions. However, the predictions for SSC or LHC energies depend on the choice of the structure function quite decisively, resulting in a substantial uncertainty in the extrapolations. The uncertainty is reduced to a less worrisome level if the consideration is restricted to the strongly shadowed parton distribution.

Notes: Abstract The dual parton model (DPM) describes soft and semihard multiparticle production. The presented version of the DPM includes soft and hard mechanisms as well as diffractive processes. The model is formulated as a Monte-Carlo event generator. We calculate, in the energy range of the hadron colliders, particle ratios as function of the transverse momentum, the rise of the average transverse momenta with the charged multiplicity, forward-backward correlations, short range correlations and factorial moments as function of the size of the pseudorapidity bins. For most of these quantities we find a reasonable agreement with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract A phenomenological successful dual fragmentation model is extended to events with unusually large particle multiplicities with the object to explain data obtained with a large transverse energy trigger. The concern of this investigation is a transition region: the dominant production mechanism is still soft and the final state still possesses an approximate one-dimensional structure, but the contributions from multiple pomeron exchange can no longer be ignored.

Notes: Abstract The difference between the proton and the antiproton distributions and the charged pion distribution are compared at largeP T and agreement is found with a model attributing baryons to final state rearrangement of hard scattered partons. The model contains a dual topological suppression of baryonic clusters at largeP T which is partially balanced as the cluster decay distribution into baryons is peaked at higher values of the momentum fractionz. The model implies positive correlations between antiproton triggers and opposite side protons.

Notes: Abstract Particle production in soft hadron-hadron collisions at collider energies is investigated in a two-step dual parton model. In the initial collision color-singlets or strings of hadronic matter are formed from constituents of the incident particles. These strings subsequently decay into chains of hadrons, analogously to the $$q\bar q$$ system in low energye + e − physics. Relying on the Monte-Carlo method we generate exclusive events and evaluate quantities of interest which include inclusive and semi-inclusive pseudorapidity spectra, topological cross-section, correlations and charge transfer distributions.

Notes: Abstract The contributions to the processes $$e^ + e^ - \to \mu ^ + \mu ^ - ,q\bar q,\gamma \gamma ,e^ + e^ - $$ , mediated by scalar and/or pseudoscalar bosons are calculated. The constraints on their coupling constants and their masses are investigated as they arise from the radiative decayZ 0→+ e − γ and from the experimental data for the annihilation processes into lepton, photon and quark pairs. Data one + e −→μ+ μ−, γγ ande + e − seriously reduce the domain of coupling constants to leptons and photons still allowed by the probable value of the width ofZ 0→e + e − γ. Experimentse + e −→μ+ μ−, γγ,e + e − at 45 GeV c.m.s. energy with a sensitivity of 10% will decide about the existence of a heavy spinless boson with the presumed phenomenological couplings to leptons and photons. Assuming universality of the coupling to leptons and quarks a conservative bound on the contribution toR arising from spinless boson exchange is already in conflict with the presumed radiative width ofZ 0→e + e − γ.
