Notes: Abstract The right parotid duct of rats was instilled five to eight times with bovine serum albumin at daily intervals. Acute parotitis developed in non-sensitized animals, while chronic destructive sialoadenitis ensued in preimmunized rats. The morphological changes were reminiscent of those found in the salivary glands of patients with Sjögren's syndrome.

Notes: Abstract. The parotid gland and knee joint of immunized rats were challenged with the sensitizing antigen. Sialoadenitis developed in over half of these rats after one and three challenges via the parotid duct. On the other hand, most glands were normal after five, seven and eight intraductal challenges in spite of the presence of precipitating antibodies in the scrum and hemagglutinating antibodies in the parotid saliva; in only a few animals did chronic destructive adenitis ensue. This contrasted with the incidence and severity of synovitis, which increased with the number of intra-articular injections of antigen. The non-reactivity of the gland is antigen specific in as much as acute adenitis resulted from intraductal instillation of a second antigen following multiple challenges with another one in rats sensitized with two antigens. The results evince a difference in the local reactivity between the salivary gland and synovial membrane.

Notes: Immunized and non-immunized rats were given 6 or 8 intragingival injections of bovine serum albumin or saline at intervals of 7, 3, 2 or 1 days. Biopsies of the gingiva were ob tained one day after the last challenge. The severity of inflammation in the oral mucosa decreased with increasing intervals between injections. Gingivitis did not develop in con trol rats, the mucosa of which was punctured 8 times without injection of solution. It is suggeseed that intragingival challenges give rise to the appearance of inhibitory factors, which are operative only when injections are administered at long spaced intervals.

Notes: Rats were passively immunized by an intraperitoneal injection of homologous anti-BSA serum and their salivary glands were challenged 20 min or 24 hours later with BSA by the intraductal route. Immune complex sialoadenitis developed only when challenge was early. It is concluded that immunoglobulins are transferred from the circulation into the salivary glands and are relatively rapidly cleared by a mechanism yet unknown, possibly by salivary flow.

Notes: One to eight injections of BSA or saline were given into the gingiva of sensitized or nonsensitized rats. The mucous membrane of untreated rats was found to be mildly inflamed. A single injection of BSA or saline caused moderate to severe gingivitis. The severity and incidence of gingivitis decreased with increasing number of injections of BSA or saline into the mucosa. This phenomenon of induced “local non-reactivity” is similar to that observed in the parotid gland after multiple introductions of antigen.

Notes: Summary Liver3H-thymidine labelling index and serum AFP were determined in rats fed a standard laboratory or choline deficient diet. A significant increase in the rate of liver cell proliferation was evidenced in animals on the deficient diet. Furthermore, elevated serum AFP levels were detected in a proportion of these rats. It is suggested that increased synthesis of AFP corresponds to liver cell regeneration secondary to hepatic damage.

Notes: Summary Saline or BSA were instilled 2, 5, 8 or 11 times at daily intervals into the parotid glands of rats, via Stensen's duct. Hydropic change of the acinar cells developed after 8 and 11 instillations. Histologically, the lesion was characterized by enlargement of the acinar cells, the cytoplasm of which contained vacuoles displacing the nuclei. In view of the negative results of various histochemical reactions the vacuolization was interpreted as hydropic in nature.

Notes: Summary Acute sialoadenitis was induced by instillation of normal human plasma into the parotid gland of specifically sensitized rats. Histologically, the sialoadenitis was characterized by an acute inflammatory infiltration and parenchymatous destruction. All rats had precipitating antibodies, but less than half exhibited delayed skin reactivity. It is suggested that antigen-antibody complexes formed in situ elicit an Arthus-type of reaction.

Notes: Summary A comparative immunofluorescence and light microscopical study of the three cell types of the Juxtaglomerular apparatus (pure muscle cells, pure granular cells and mixed cells) was performed on the growing and maturing kidney of the rat. Mixed cells, containing contractile protein and secretory granules, are detectable on the first postnatal day in about one third of the JGAs. From the third week, the number of bivalent cells increases, while the proportion of pure muscle or pure granular cells decreases. Morphological and functional maturation, achieved by 3 to 4 weeks, is associated with increasing numbers of bivalent cells and a shift in the main site of renin production from the inner to the outer cortical zone. The divergent internal structure of JGA cell types expresses the range of varied differentiation expressed by one cell line. Pure muscle or granular cells are at the extremes of the range and mixed cells take up an intermediate position.
