    Notes: Diode laser transient absorption/gain spectroscopy is used to monitor time-dependent populations of CD3 fragments formed in the photodissociation of acetone-d6 at 193 nm. Selected rotational lines have been measured in the ν2 "umbrella'' fundamental and first two hot bands, and in the ν3 asymmetric stretching fundamental band. Substantial growth is observed in the vibrationless state on the time scale of vibrational relaxation. We estimate that only about 15% of the nascent CD3 population is formed in the vibrational states we detect: ν2=1 and 2, ν3=1, and the vibrationless state. Most of the nascent methyl population is evidently spread among many undetected vibrational states. These results complement previous measurements of acetone photofragments by infrared emission, multiphoton ionization, and laser-induced fluorescence. Our inferred global vibrational distribution is consistent with a two-step fragmentation.

    Notes: Abstract A new method using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) through the BIAcore was used to demonstrate the specific interaction between an anti-CD4 monoclonal antibody (IOT4a), adsorbed on poly(methylidene malonate 2.1.2) (PMM 2.1.2) nanoparticles, and the CD4 molecule. The results obtained were compared with the interaction of the same immunonanoparticles with rabbit anti-mouse Fc antibodies. The molar ratio (Fc)/(Fab) was 1, suggesting that the same number of epitopes on the Fc and the Fab fragments were accessible after IOT4a adsorption onto nanoparticles. Comparing the observed association rates of free antibody and antibody adsorbed on nanoparticles, the number of molecules of IOT4a antibody on PMM 2.1.2 nanoparticles was estimated as between 2.6 and 3 per nanoparticle. The properties of the antibody-coated nanoparticles are compatible with their use as antibody-targeted pharmacophores.

    Notes: Abstract A simple formulation of the TSP energy function is described which, in combination with a normalized Hopfield-Tank neural network, eliminates the difficulty in finding valid tours. This technique is applicable to many other optimization problems involving n-way decisions (such as VLSI layout and resource allocation) and is easily implemented in a VLSI neural network. The solution quality is shown to be dependent on the formation of seed-points which are influenced by the constraint penalties and the temperature (i.e. the neural gain). Near-optimal tours are found by annealing the network down to a critical temperature at which a single seed-point is dominant. The seed-points and critical temperature (which also affect standard Hopfield network solutions to the TSP) can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. It is also shown that the annealing process is not necessary and good tours result if the network is allowed to converge solely at the critical temperature. The seed-points can be eliminated entirely by assigning different temperatures to groups of neurons such that the tour evolves uniformly throughout the cities. The resulting network finds the optimum tour in a 30-city example in 30% of the trials.

    Notes: Abstract This paper discusses research on scalable VLSI implementations of feed-forward and recurrent neural networks. These two families of networks are useful in a wide variety of important applications—classification tasks for feed-forward nets and optimization problems for recurrent nets—but their differences affect the way they should be built. We find that analog computation with digitally programmable weights works best for feed-forward networks, while stochastic processing takes advantage of the integrative nature of recurrent networks. We have shown early prototypes of these networks which compute at rates of 1–2 billion connections per second. These general-purpose neural building blocks can be coupled with an overall data transmission framework that is electronically reconfigured in a local manner to produce arbitrarily large, fault-tolerant networks.
