Notes: Abstract Discontinuous starch gel electrophoresis revealed a fourth allele of rabbit prealbumin serum esterase at locus Est-2. This allele is designated Est-2 f and appears to be silent. In addition to the prealbumin serum esterases, another serum esterase system was studied in rabbits. This system is localized in the β-globulin region. Genetic analysis indicated that one locus with two codominant alleles controls the variation in this region. Linkage of this system with Est-1 and Est-2 of the prealbumin serum esterases was demonstrated. Comparison of the arrangement of these esterase loci on linkage group VI with the esterase loci on chromosome 8 of the mouse gives additional support for the theory of evolutionary conservation of chromosomal segments coding for mammalian esterases.

Notes: Abstract Nine inbred strains of the rat (Rattus norvegicus) were screened for differences in electrophoretically detectable proteins. Interstrain variation was observed for 7 of 26 proteins. Three of these variants have not been described previously: leucine aminopeptidase (Lap-1), major urinary protein (Mup-1), and seminal vesicle protein (Svp-2). Genetic analysis revealed two autosomal alleles for each of these polymorphisms. The loci Lap-1, Mup-1, and Svp-2 are linked neither to one another nor to the previously described Svp-1 and Es-4 loci. Each of the nine strains can be identified now by a specific set of monogenic markers.

Notes: Abstract The present status of research in, and the practical use of, blood groups in animals is reviewed. Blood groups in animals are mainly used as genetic markers for the control of doubtful parentages and for genetic studies. In animals the role of blood groups in transfusion and in incompatibility, of matings is limited. For cattle, horses, sheep, swine and chickens, studies on blood groups have reached a fairly high level of scientific and practical interest. For other species this knowledge is more limited.

Notes: Abstract The mode of inheritance of blood groups in man and animals has been a matter of discussion as long as investigations in this field have been performed. A series of aberrations from the usual transmission of genes controlling the blood groups of the system B of cattle is presented. These data offer a contribution to the assumption that the blood groups are controlled by linked genes.

Notes: Abstract In the course of analyses of iso-immune sera for cattle erythrocytes a reagent has been isolated of which the reaction pattern differs from the patterns of the known reagents for cattle blood groups. Data on family studies of cattle of which blood samples have been tested with the new reagent, demonstrate that the occurrence of the substance, detected with this reagent, is genetically determined. Evidence will be presented to show that a so far unknown locus on the chromosomes of cattle can be established with the use of this reagent.

Notes: Abstract The transmission and genetic organization of the adhesion of the serological variants of the K88 adhesin in the jejunum of the pig were investigated. The results of 28 matings of 5 boars with 15 sows are presented. On the basis of previous studies it has been accepted that the presence of specific receptor sites for K88ab and K88ac depends on a gene locus with 2 alleles S and s. The presence of additional receptor sites for K88ad is now presumed to depend on a separate locus with the alleles D and d. The expression of the alleles of the S and D loci is not always complete and is likely to be influenced by epistatic genes. Inhibition or modification of the expression of the receptor sites for K88 can result in intermediate phenotypes.
