    Notes: Abstract. The concept of farming Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., beyond smolt stage in sea water started in Norway and Scotland in 1967–1968, using natural enclosures or sea water ponds. Cage culture has since 1969 developed to be the dominating method. Atlantic salmon is cultivated in more than nine countries with a production of 235400t in 1990.Incubation of eggs, hatching, first feeding and smolt production have to a large degree been standardized. Various types of incubator systems and holding units are briefly presented and discussed.There has recently been a trend to move ongrowing cage farms from inshore and sheltered waters to more open and offshore locations. The various types of cages and supplemental equipment for the two options are compared and evaluated. The offshore trend is a more expensive and difficult technology than existing inshore farming methods. Sea enclosures and net enclosures are less attractive.There is new interest in pump ashore systems. Large land-based farms have been built in six countries with varying success. The amounts of water required are enormous and constructions costs are high, but running costs are comparable to cage culture. Great improvements have taken place for both smolt farms and pump ashore farms in treatment of water, use of heat exchangers, filtration of water, disinfection, aeration, oxygenation, photoperiod and light control, automatic feeding, internal transport, handling of fish and surveillance and control systems for fish and water. The problems and prospects of farming are discussed in relation to new and old technology.

    Notes: Pyelonephritis-associated pilus (Pap) expression is regulated by a phase variation control mechanism involving PapB, Papl, catabolite activator protein (CAP), leucine-responsive regulatory protein (Lrp) and deoxyadenosine methylase (Dam). Lrp and Papl bind to a specific non-methylated pap regulatory DNA region containing the sequence ‘GATC’ and facilitate the formation of an active transcriptional complex. Evidence indicates that binding of Lrp and Papl to this region inhibits methylation of the GATC site by Dam. However, if this GATC site is first methylated by Dam, binding of Lrp and Papl is inhibited. These events lead to the formation of two different pap methylation states characteristic of active (ON) and inactive (OFF) pap transcription states. The fae (K88), daa (F1845) and sfa (S) pilus operons share conserved ‘GATC-box’ domains with pap and may be subject to a similar regulatory control mechanism involving Lrp and DNA methylation.

    Notes: Abstract The biological effects of 5 surface active agents (the anionic ABS, LAS and LES 3 EO and the nonionic NP 10 EO and TAE 10 EO) on marine fishes, crustaceans and bivalves have been tested in, continuous-flow systems. Concentrations from 100 to 0.5 ppm were normally used. Fishes were found to be more susceptible (96 hLC 50 range: 0.8 to 6.5 ppm) than bivalves (96 hLC50 range: 5 to 〉100 ppm) while crustaceans were considerably more resistant (96 h LC 50 range: 25 to 〉 100 ppm). Within each of these 3 systematic groups, more active species were found to be more sensitive than less active species. Developmental stages were also more sensitive than adults. The resistance of crustaceans to surfactants decreases immediately after moulting. The most toxic agent for fishes and decapods was the “soft” anionic LAS, and for bivalves and barnacles the “hard” nonionic NP 10 EO. Ability to recover normal behaviour after exposure decreases with increasing concentration and time, and ceases earlier in anionic than in nonionic surfactants. The first reaction to the surfactants is increased activity (avoidance reaction of mobile species), followed successively by inactivation, immobilization and death. Nonionic surfactants affect the equilibrium in fishes. Sublethal effects appear as impaired locomotory activity and breathing rate in fishes and crustaceans, impaired byssus activity and shell closure in Mytilus edulis, burrowing in Cardium edule, Astarte montagui and Astarte sulcata. Siphon retraction is affected in Mya arenaria and Cardium edule, as is also the response to food of the Leander spp.
