Abstract An automated CSTR system has been developed to study the stability of immobilised whole cell biocatalysts for ammonium acrylate production. Two potentially useful amidase-active rhodococci have been identified: One possesses an amidase of much higher activity than the other but of much lower stability. The activity and stability of each biocatalyst over a range of temperatures has been determined and used to compare the productivity of the biocatalysts in a bioconversion.
