Notes: The preparation and characterization (analyses of IR and mass spectra) of 5-methyl-5-hexen-2,4-dione (1) and its polymerization and copolymerization with styrene are described. Poly(1) and copolymers from 1 and styrene give metal chelates in solution and on metal surfaces. Copolymers of 1 and styrene increase the adhesion and the resistance against corrosion of varnishes for metals on the basis of melamine.

Notes: The construction and function of an apparatus for the determination of gas permeability through metallized polymer films is described. The test gases N2, O2, and CO2 penetrate under pressure differences from 100 torr to 20 bar through galvanized ABS films (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer). The metallic layers consists of chemically deposited Ni and a galvanic deposited Cu having a thickness of 2-30 μm. The quantity of permeated gases is determined by gas chromatography. The lowest permeability coefficient obtained is 10-17 (cm3 cm/cm2 sec torr). Leak effects can be measured quantitatively. The permeability of gas mixtures (i.e., air) can also be investigated. The apparatus allows the determination of extremely low permeability rates as well as those for conventional polymer systems.

Description / Table of Contents: The structure of a 15-20 μm thick copper layer, which is deposited electrochemically on copolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene from bathes containing additives is extremely distorted. This is caused by microstresses and paracrystalline lattice distortions. On the other hand, the structure of the copper layer deposited from a pure bath is independent of the chemical pre-conditioning of the polymer surface, necessary for plating, and equal to that of a high crystalline pure copper.
