Notes: Steers from four fundamentally different genetic backgrounds in size and maturation rates (ranging from large size-slow maturing to small size-fast maturing) were fed on pasture or in a feedlot. Expressing cholesterol on a fresh (FR), dry matter (DM) or fat-free dry matter (FFDM) basis changed the rank of growth type but expressing extracted fat on a FR or DM basis did not change this trait. Differences in the cholesterol (FR basis) concentration of M. longissimus thoracis muscle grading between US Standard+ and US Choice° were less than 4 mg/100 g of the uncooked and cooked muscle. Cooking decreased moisture and increased FFDM, extracted fat (FR and DM basis) and cholesterol (FR basis) concentration.

Notes: Signature-tagged mutagenesis (STM) is a method that has been used to screen for genes required for in vivo survival of pathogenic bacteria, but has not been used to investigate a eukaryotic pathogen in an animal model of disease. We have adapted STM to identify genes required for in vivo growth of the opportunistic fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. Using a mouse model of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, we have isolated several mutant strains with defects in their ability to replicate in vivo. One strain unable to cause lethal infection was further characterized and found to have an insertion into the promoter of a gene (pabaA) encoding para-aminobenzoic acid synthetase, an enzyme catalyzing a late step in the biosynthesis of folate. The complete inability of this strain, and other pabaA− strains constructed in this study by targeted gene deletion, to cause lethal infection in mice confirms the importance of the folate synthesis pathway for in vivo survival of this pathogen. The successful application of STM to A. fumigatus demonstrates that in vivo genetic analysis of eukaryotic pathogens is feasible and could result in the identification of potential targets, such as para-aminobenzoic acid synthetase, for novel antifungal therapies.

Notes: Summary 1. The benefits of helping behavior to recipients were studied by analyzing the factors that influence rates of feeding of nestlings by parents and helpers in Pomatostomus temporalis. 2. Considering the nestlings as recipients, no benefits were detected from helpers that would not have been received from the parents alone: total feeding rate was independent of the number of helpers. Total feeding rate was dependent on the energy needs of the nestlings and on environmental factors, such as temperature and rainfall. 3. Considering parents as recipients, benefits were detected in the form of energy savings. As the number of helpers increased, the feeding rates of parents declined in terms of both percentage (Fig. 1) and absolute feeding rates. The percentage of decline with each additional helper diminshed as the number of helpers increased up to four. With eight helpers there was little or no more savings to the parents than with four. 4. Helpers benefited from the presence of other helpers in the same way as adults, namely, by an energy savings (Fig. 1). 5. Feeding rates of nestlings by fathers and helpers were lower in the presence of dependent juveniles from a previous brood than in their absence.

Notes: Summary Variation in weight, wing length and bill length in a population of grey-crowned babblers is influenced primarily by sex and age, but correlations with size of social unit, with reproductive success, and with vegetation are also detectable (Table 1). The latter correlations vary with sex, age, and status as helper or breeder. Differential wear according to behavioral role, competition for status, incubation, and inheritance are discussed as possible causal mechanisms. Helpers were not detectably smaller in any dimension than breeders of the same age and sex. Male and female non-breeding helpers differ in patterns of morphological correlation, suggesting that they have different behavioral roles. Breeding males have a unique pattern of morphological correlation, suggesting that their foraging behavior differs from breeding females and non-breeders.

Notes: Summary An intensive study of a population of Grey-crowned Babblers comprising nearly 300 birds in 46 social units was carried out in Queensland, Australia. This paper describes the population, the study area, and its vegetation with special attention to relationships between group size, age structure and vegetation. Individuals lived in units of 2 to 13 (Fig. 2) composed of a breeding pair and up to 11 non-breeders. Iris color, described in the Munsell system, was used for age determination. The population was composed mainly of yellow-eyed breeders and brown-eyed, yearling non-breeders (Fig. 3). Older breeders tended to be in larger units (Fig. 5) and mated to each other rather than to younger breeders (Table 3). Unit size was correlated with characteristics of vegetation on the territories. Smaller units were more variable in vegetation than larger units (Fig. 6). The correlation of some vegetation indices with unit size was lowest near the nest (Fig. 7). Vegetation was loosely correlated with breeder iris color, hence age (Table 5).

Notes: Abstract Purpose: To ascertain whether patients with unilateral visual loss to a specific level are able to approximate the degree of impairment of quality-of-life experienced by patients with bilateral visual loss to the same level. Methods: One hundred thirty-three study group patients with (1) visual loss to 20/40 or worse in at least one eye, and (2) a marked difference between the visual acuities in their two eyes, were polled using the time tradeoff method of utility value measurement. All patients were asked to assume that the visual acuity in both of their eyes was as poor as the visual acuity in their worst seeing eye. These utility values were then compared to those obtained from a control group of 173 patients with known utility values who had similar bilateral visual loss. Both the study and control groups were stratified into 4 levels of visualloss (20/40 to 20/50, 20/60 to 20/100, 20/200 to 20/400, and counting fingers to light perception). Results: Mean utility values for the study group ranged from 0.47 to 0.71. Patients with unilateral visual loss, given the assumption of bilateral visual loss to the same degree, routinely demonstrated no significant difference in utility preferences as compared to patients with true bilateral visual loss to the samelevel. Conclusions: Patients with unilateral visual loss can very accurately estimate the degree of impairment of quality-of-life that would result if visual loss to a similar degree occurred in the remaining eye with better vision.

Notes: Abstract The cases of 100 consecutive persons (156 eyes) seen with peripheral proliferative retinopathy were reviewed in a retrospective fashion. Associated systemic and ocular diseases included sickling hemoglobinopathies (49%), branch retinal vein obstruction (20%), diabetes mellitus (9%), sarcoidosis (4%), intravenous drug abuse (4%), the ocular ischemic syndrome (1%), pars planitis (1%), Coats' disease (1%) and retinitis pigmentosa/retinal detachment (1%). In ten (10%) patients no obvious cause for the development of new blood vessel growth could be ascertained.

Notes: Abstract We investigated potential gender differences in video game (pong) performance in university students. In Experiment 1 men (N = 16) performed significantly better than women (N = 16). Experiment 2 was similar to the first, but used 14 men and 14 women who were matched carefully on previous video game experience. In spite of the matching, results replicated those of the first experiment. In Experiment 3 we evaluated the effect of an audience (male, female, none) on pong performance in 42 men and 42 women. We also assessed trait competition anxiety (Sport Competition Anxiety Test scores), sex role identification (Bem Sex Role Inventory scores), and video game experience. Both genders showed significantly poorer performance when they played pong in the presence of a female audience. Overall, males outperformed females as in the first two experiments. Examination of individuals with low, medium, and high levels of sport competition anxiety and videogame experience reveals persistent gender differences in performance, seemingly independent of levels of anxiety and experience. In all three experiments, both men and women showed significant improvement in performance over trials.
