Notes: The rotational dynamics of NH3 in the ammoniated fulleride (NH3)K3C60 are studied by the inelastic neutron scattering technique. Well-defined excitations appear in the low-energy spectra at 1.5 K as a broad band centered at ∼350 μeV with shoulders at ∼240 and 590 μeV. The temperature dependence of their intensities, energies, and widths is consistent with their assignment to rotational tunneling transitions of the NH3 molecule. The estimated barrier of the threefold hindrance potential to rotation of the H atoms about the K–N axis is ∼5.7 meV. The existence of minority hindering sites with both larger (∼8 meV) and smaller (∼2 meV) torsional barriers shows that orientational disorder effects survive in (NH3)K3C60 even at low temperatures. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sorption of ten different quantities of D2 within the porous coordination metal frameworkCu3(1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)2 were studied using neutron powder diffraction. D2 sorption in theporous material reached saturation (at 25 K) at an amount equivalent to ~6.5 wt. % H2. Rietveldanalyses revealed that at saturation there are two saturated small pore and three saturated large poresites, in addition to the primary site at the coordinatively unsaturated Cu. We reveal that the linkedbimodal pore system provides up to nine distinct sites for D2, at moderate D2 concentrations up tosaturation. Intermediate sites are attributed to local D2-D2 interaction within the confined porespaces. Within the small and large pores one, and two, intermediate sites are identified, respectively. The population of D2 at each site was found to affect the host lattice

Notes: Abstract Twenty-seven preschool 4- and 5-year-olds were matched on a range of assessment measures and assigned to one of three instruction groups: a self-instruction group, a skills training group, and a no-treatment control group. For the first five weekly intervention sessions, treatment subjects were trained on the concepts of same and different in a visual discrimination format. During the last four intervention sessions, treatment subjects were trained on maze and size sequencing tasks. Instructional training effects were assessed after 5 and 9 weeks of training with two measures of proximal generalization, the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) and a picture sequencing task, and one measure of distal generalization, a revised version of the Tower of Hanoi. Only the self-instruction group demonstrated significant improvement on the MFFT, the picture sequencing task, and the more difficult flat ending problems on the Tower of Hanoi. These results with preschool children support the potential for generalization of self-instruction training effects to tasks both conceptually similar and dissimilar to the original training tasks.
