Notes: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to image charged defects on the clean Si(100)-(2×1) surface. Previous studies have shown that, in the absence of "C"-type defects, the surface does not pin the Fermi level, allowing near surface charge to influence the state density contributing to the tunneling current. As in the case of cleavage faces of III–V semiconductor crystals, the charge-induced band bending produces long-range enhancements superimposed on the periodic surface lattice. This is observed in empty-state STM images taken on n-type material. No band bending signature is seen in the filled-state images. This can be understood by considering the band structure at the surface, which has surface states within the band gap. The charged defects observed in this work are of the types commonly observed in clean Si(100)-(2×1) STM studies, however, not all defects of a given type appear charged. This would indicate subtle differences in structure or the influence of impurities. Predictions for p-type material will also be made. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Processing-induced magnetic structures in amorphous metallic alloys are of interest because of their impact on the performance of materials used in electric device applications. Plastic deformation associated with cutting or bending the material to the desired shape occurs through the formation of shear bands. The stress associated with these shear bands induces magnetic domains that can lead to power losses through interaction with the fields and currents involved in normal device operation. These domains have been studied previously using a variety of techniques capable of imaging magnetic domain structures. In an effort to better characterize and understand these issues, we have applied atomic and magnetic force microscopy to these materials to provide three-dimensional nanometer-scale topographic resolution and micrometer-scale magnetic resolution. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Reports from 87 community-based sister-pairs, selected for high rates of neglect or abuse in childhood, have been used to establish validity of the CECA, a retrospective interview measure of childhood experience. Corroboration was based on independent assessments of sisters accounts of what happened to each other in childhood. Corroboration of scales assessing parental neglect, physical abuse in the household and sexual abuse either household or nonhousehold I was satisfactory, with a mean correlation for the three experiences of.60 (weighted kappa [kw]).Concordance reflected the degree to which experience was shared and was judged by comparing the sisters' accounts of their own experience. Among sisters with shared (concordant) experience for neglect or abuse, corroboration was high (mean of 74), but for those with nonshared (nonconcordant) experience it was largely absent (mean of .011. The degree to which I he experiences of neglect or abuse were concordant was related to whether the perpetrator was a member of the household. Neglect and physical abuse were by definition from household members i mainly parents I and involved high concordance of experience. Sexual abuse occurred from many sources and in practice was commonly from an adult living outside the household and such experiences were less likely to be shared by sisters. An overall index indicating the presence of at least one abusive experience before the age of 17 showed a concordance of .64 with corroboration between sisters as high as 70, Issues involving retrospective recall and measurement are discussed.

Notes: Conditions for insertion of the laryngeal mask were assessed following induction of anaesthesia with either propofol 2.5 mg/kg or thiopentone 4.0 mg/kg in 80 patients premedicated with diazepam 10 mg. Insertion following induction with thiopentone resulted in a greater incidence of gagging (p 〈 0.01). The use of additional induction agent, where necessary, resulted in no ultimate significant difference between the groups for the provision of satisfactory conditions.

Notes: A systematic procedure is provided for determination of D-amino acid oxidase (EC 1.4.3.3) activity in fish tissues. Activity was surveyed in crude liver homogenates of twenty-three species of fish. Activity ranged from 0-047 to 3-12 units (ρmol product produced per min) per gram wet weight of tissue. Activity was highest in liver, with significant levels occurring in kidney and pyloric caecae. It was below the limit of detection in brain, heart, spleen, testis, gill filaments, and muscle. Some properties of the enzyme from sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka (Walbaum), were studied. Knowledge of occurrence and levels of D-amino acid oxidase in fish may be useful to fish aquaculturists contemplating supplementation of feed with racemic mixtures of amino acids.

Notes: Abstract The development of a retrospective, investigator-based interview measure of Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse (CECA) used with two community samples of adults in London is described. The component ratings are shown to have satisfactory inter-rater reliability and also validity as determined by agreement between sisters' independent accounts. The association between the different childhood scales is explored as well as the relationship of childhood experiences to adult depression. Methodological issues concerning investigator-based versus respondent-based measures of childhood are discussed and a case made for use of the former. Advantages of using the CECA, a retrospective, time-based measure of childhood, are outlined.

Notes: Abstract An intergenerational community study in Islington, north London, has considered psychiatric disorder in mothers and their adolescent and early adult daughters and the role of parenting in any link between the two. The results indicate that daughters are more likely to have disorders at a case level when their mothers have chronic or recurrent episodes of disorder at this level. Such conditions in the mother relate to the daughters' reports of adverse family experiences involving maternal antipathy and neglect and physical and sexual abuse, most usually at the hands of a father or stepfather. These adverse experiences are associated with disorder in daughters independently of any disorder in the mother.
