    Notes: GH∞ -de Witt supermanifolds were recently introduced by Rogers [Commun. Math. Phys. 105, 375 (1986)]. It is shown that these supermanifolds correspond to objects in a specified category of extended graded manifolds (subject only to the condition L〉2q), and some conclusions are drawn about their structure. In particular, it is shown that a GH∞ -de Witt supermanifold is always a vector bundle over its body. Finally it is shown that extended graded manifolds are always trivial extensions of ordinary graded manifolds. This means that all GH∞-de Witt supermanifolds are in fact H∞.

    Notes: Abstract : We have determined the exon-intron organization and characterized the 5′-flanking promoter region of DLG4. Encompassing ~30 kb, the DLG4 locus is composed of 22 exons that range in size from 28 to 1,218 nucleotides. All splice sites conform to the GT-AG rule, except for the splice acceptor site of intron 5, which is TG instead of AG. Three different exons of DLG4 were found to be alternatively spliced in a subset of tissues. Two of these variants result in altered postsynaptic density 95 (PSD95) isoforms that dramatically truncate the protein. The third splicing variant represents an extension of exon 4 that encodes an additional 33-amino acid segment. Analysis of the core promoter region for DLG4 suggests that the expression of this gene is controlled by a TATA-less promoter using a single transcriptional start site embedded within a CpG island. DLG4 maps to a region on chromosome 17p13.1 known to contain a locus for autosomal dominant cone dystrophy 5. Scanning for mutations in the DLG4 coding region and splice sites was performed in 15 cone dystrophy patients, including probands from five families showing linkage to the DLG4 region. No disease-causing mutations were identified in any patients, suggesting that DLG4 is not the causative gene for this genetic eye disorder.

    Notes: This study deals with repentistas: oral poets in the northeast of Brazil, most of whom have had limited schooling. Twenty-four repentistas, 27 non-repentistas from a similar background, and 38 university students were given a rhyme production task. The repentistas produced about three times as many rhymes as the SES-matched non-repentistas and over one-and-a-half times as many as the students. They did not, however, differ significantly from the nonrepentistas or students in regard to auditory memory or phonological segmentation; they were similar to non-repentistas and considerably worse than students on tests of IQ and reading speed. Thus, the rhyming ability of the repentistas appears to be both highly developed and dissociated from certain other language skills.

    Notes: It has been shown that there is a strong relation between children's phonological skills and the progress that they make in reading. But there is some uncertainty whether this is a specific connection or whether it is just a byproduct of variations in general language ability. We report evidence from a longitudinal study showing that the relation between children's sensitivity to rhyme and alliteration and their success in reading is highly specific and cannot be accounted for in terms of general language ability. In this study measures were taken of a group of children's linguistic and metalinguistic skills when they were 3 and 4 years old. The linguistic measures were of the children's vocabulary, their receptive and expressive use of grammar, and their ability to imitate sentences. The metalinguistic measures were of their ability to detect rhyme and alliteration and of their awareness of syntax. Two to three years later, when the children were 6;7, we measured their progress in reading and spelling. The children's rhyme and alliteration scores were related to their reading two years later even after controls for differences in linguistic skills and also for differences in intelligence and in social background. The other metalinguistic task – syntax awareness – did not predict reading after these controls. Awareness of rhyme, we argue, makes a distinctive contribution to reading by helping children to form spelling categories.

    Notes: Abstract The development of children's understanding of mathematical relations and of their grasp of the number system is described. It is discussed that children easily recognise one-way pan-pan relations but that the number system at first causes them difficulty. Children's relational understanding allows them to solve addition and subtraction problems fairly well when these deal with simple increases and decreases in quantity.     Notes: We look at the awareness of grammatical distinctions in children with reading difficulties, and at their ability to use this awareness in order to learn about the conventional spellings for morphemes like ”ed“ at the end of past verbs. Using longitudinal methods we show that, initially, children who are to become poor readers are actually better in this aspect of spelling and also in grammatical awareness tasks than younger children of the same reading level: but they are worse than these other children in tasks that tax their knowledge of phonologically based letter-sound correspondences. Later on, however, the poor readers lose their initial advantages in the conventional spelling of morphemes. We conclude that poor readers are initially held back by a failure to learn about letter-sound correspondences, and that this deprives them of successful reading experience, which in turn hampers the growth of their grammatical awareness and their learning how to spell morphemes.
