Abstract:
Notes:
Abstract Radiation exchange is one of the important modes of heat transfer which may contribute to the thermal stress of the occupant of an enclosure. Consideration is given to radiation exchange within the enclosure as well as between the structure and its environment.Orientation, geometry and modification of the radiation properties of external surfaces significantly affects the solar power absorbed by a structure. Minimum daily solar input in July and approximately maximum daily solar input in January was achieved for a width-to-length ratio of 1:2 with the long wall facing south. A reduction of as much as 71% in daily solar input was demonstrated by reducing surface absorptance to about 0.2. A study to determine the importance of accounting for directional properties indicates that the use of near-normal solar reflectances gave acceptable results for design purposes when compared with predictions based on directional properties. It is also shown that modification of radiation properties and/or use of solar shields significantly affects the inside surface temperature distribution as well as the inside air temperature.A reduction of roof absorptance from 0.8 to 0.2 for a wood frame dwelling resulted in a 10°F reduction in peak ceiling temperature and a 3°F reduction in the peak inside air temperature.
