Notes: We have measured the anisotropic transport properties of Bi2223/Ag tapes with and without the silver sheath. The anisotropy ratio of the resistivity along the rolling plane to the resistivity perpendicular to the rolling plane (∼4–10) is orders of magnitude smaller than single-crystal anisotropy ratios. Results are consistent with current flow along crystallographic ab planes even for transport normal to the tape plane.

Notes: We argue that superconductor/ferromagnet multilayers of nanoscale period should exhibit strong pinning of vortices by the magnetic domain structure in magnetic fields below the coercive field when ferromagnetic layers exhibit strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The estimated maximum magnetic pinning energy for single vortex in such a system is about 100 times larger than the pinning energy by columnar defects. This pinning energy may provide critical currents as high as 106−107 A/cm2 at high temperatures (but not very close to Tc) at least in magnetic fields below 0.1 T. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Clean magnetic superconductors are considered in which the phase transition into the ferromagnetic state takes place at a temperature ϑ in the absence of superconductivity, with ϑ≪T c1, whereT c1 is the superconducting critical temperature. The exchange and electromagnetic interactions of electrons and localized magnetic moments are taken into account, as well as magnetic anisotropy. We show that below the temperatureT M≈ϑ in the superconducting state the inhomogeneous magnetic structure of transverse one-dimensional domain type (DS phase) should occur at real values of the exchange interaction and anisotropy. In the DS phase gapless superconductivity is realized at temperatures sufficiently far fromT M. Here the equilibrium direction of the magnetic structure wave vectorQ can be changed by applying a supercurrent across the sample. The behavior of this DS phase in an external magnetic field is also considered.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of superconductivity is considered for a strongly disordered metal approaching the Anderson transition. A microscopic derivation of the coefficients of the Ginzburg-Landau expansion is given for a system in the vicinity of the mobility edge. The localization transition is described within the framework of the self-consistent theory of localization. The superconducting response persists in the localization region. The appropriate change in the behavior of the upper critical fieldH c2 is considered for the localization region. The Coulomb repulsion grows as the Fermi level approaches the mobility edge, leading to a degradation of the superconductingT c . However, under rather rigid conditions superconductivity is possible both at the mobility edge and in a narrow region below the mobility edge, i.e., in an Anderson insulator. Finally, experimental data for superconducting molybdenum sulfides irradiated by fast neutrons are discussed.

Notes: The coexistence region of a superconducting phase and a helical ordering of localized spins is found within an isotropic model of free electrons and localized spins. Superconducting properties of this new phase are also studied. The experimental data regarding the superconducting-magnetic transition in ternary compounds are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The asperomagnetic ordering model with a randomly oriented “easy axis” in the basal plane provides a natural explanation of the unusual magnetic properties of ErRh4B4, including the different results of Mössbauer and neutron diffraction measurements of the magnetic moment in the normal low temperature magnetic phase (FN phase) as well as anomalies in the magnetic ordering at the transition from the nonmagnetic superconducting phase (S phase) to the FN phase. Here the small intensities of satellites and the simultaneous appearance of ferromagnetic peaks and satellites are explained in terms of the destruction of inhomogeneous magnetic structure in the coexistence phase due to disorder in the main part of the sample. The effect of disorder on the coexistence state in pseudoternary compounds is also considered.

Notes: Abstract These are states that go over to the 2pz states of the neutral atoms as the latter recede to infinity; they include the ground state and most of the lower excited states. Then Schrödinger's equation and the operators for the physical quantities may be projected on the space of spin functions. A method is given for calculating the projected hamiltonian and operators as a rapidly convergent series in the number of interacting centers. Pair interactions are shown to play the main part in the spin hamiltonian. The convergence is examined for the series for the momentum and spin-density operators. Schrödinger's equation with the spin hamiltonian then gives a complete solution of the problem; as in the valence-bond method, the task is facilitated by the fact that the subspaces of defined system spin may be distinguished in spin space. A method is given for selecting the states from the measured terms for the molecule. It is shown that all absorption lines corresponding to excitation of such states should be weak for alternant hydrocarbons.

Notes: Abstract Quasi-homeopolar levels of π- and σ-electrons in conjugate hydrocarbons are considered. It is shown that in the spin hamiltonian and the projected operators of the physical values there appear terms which involve π-σ-interaction. The spin hamiltonian of π-σ-interaction is small, and its contribution to energies and spin functions can be calculated from perturbation theory by taking the spin hamiltonian of noninteracting π- and σ-electrons as equal to zero. The π- and σ-electrons of the C=C bond in ethylene are considered in detail. Calculations show that their interaction increases the excitation energy of the lower triplet of ethylene. The spin hamiltonian parameters of the simplest conjugate hydrocarbons are determined. The accuracy of the valence-bond method is investigated on the basis of the theory of quasi-homeopolar levels. It is shown that empirical selection of the parameters partially compensates for the errors which are made in the derivation of the fundamental equation for this approximation.
