    Notes: Abstract  Factors, both physical and chemical, influencing the pore-structure stability of high temperature catalysts and/or catalyst supports were discussed with a view to formulate strategies to design and develop high temperature catalyst supports. Factors influencing the sintering behavior and techniques to manipulate them are discussed. Chemical ways of modifying porosity reduction behavior can lead to changes in catalytic behavior. Therefore several physical techniques like control of packing and coordination by post precipitation treatment and nanocomposite formation, changing particle morphology and introducing rigid constraints were discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was implanted with 15 keV Fe or Ti ions up to a dose of 8×1016 at cm−2. The resulting “dopant” concentrations exceeded the concentrations corresponding to the equilibrium solid solubility of Fe2O3 or TiO2 in YSZ. During oxidation in air at 400° C, the Fe and Ti concentration in the outermost surface layer increased even further until a surface layer was formed of mainly Fe2O3 and TiO2, as shown by XPS and ISS measurements. From the time dependence of the Fe and Ti depth profiles during anneal treatments, diffusion coefficients were calculated. From those values it was estimated that the maximum temperature at which the Fe- and Ti-implanted layers can be operated without changes in the dopant concentration profiles was 700 and 800° C, respectively. The high-dose implanted layer was completely amorphous even after annealing up to 1100° C, as shown by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Preliminary measurements on 50 keV Ag implanted YSZ indicate that in this case the amorphous layer recrystallizes into fine grained cubic YSZ at a temperature of about 1000° C. The average grain diameter was estimated at 20 nm, whereas the original grain size of YSZ before implantation was 400 nm. This result implies that the grain size in the surface of a ceramic material can be decreased by ion beam amorphisation and subsequent recrystallisation at elevated temperatures.

    Notes: Abstract The oxidation state of Fe and Ti ions implanted in yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was studied by XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) in combination with depth profiling using Ar+ sputtering. In the “as-implanted” state of the sample Fe was found to be present as Fe3+, Fe2+ and as metallic Fe0. This is in agreement with earlier conversion electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy measurements. For Ti-implanted YSZ in the “as-implanted” state the majority of the Ti is present as Ti4+, Ti3+, and Ti2+ ions, while a part of the Zr cations is present in the divalent oxidation state (Zr2+). After oxidation in air, the Fe and Ti ions are present only in the valence three and four oxidation states, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract The response time (t r) after a step change in oxygen partial pressure was investigated for some solid electrolytes used in Nernst type oxygen sensors. The electrolyte as well as the (porous) electrode material affect the value oft r. Stabilized Bi2O3 materials exhibit slower response rates (largert r values) than stabilized ZrO2. Introduction of Bi2O3 in stabilized ZrO2 increases the response time. Gold electrodes show a higher response rate than platinum in the oxygen partial pressure and temperature region used.

    Notes: Abstract Using cells with calcia stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte, the standard free energy of formation of stabilized Bi2O3 (fcc) was determined in the temperature range 750–950 K. The stability against reduction of stabilized Bi2O3 (fcc) is not increased with respect to pureδ-Bi2O3 (fcc). The corrosion of the calcia stabilized zirconia tube caused by Bi2O3 which took place along the grain boundaries, was investigated.

    Notes: Abstract The phase diagram of the Bi2O3-Er2O3 system was investigated. A monophasic f c c structure was stabilized for samples containing 17.5–45.5 mol% Er2O3. Above and below this concentration range polyphasic regions appear. The f c c phase showed high oxygen ion conduction. The ionic transference number is equal to one for specimens containing 30 mol% Er2O3 or less, while an electronic component is introduced at low temperatures for specimens containing 40–60 mol% Er2O3. Between 673 K and 873 K a maximum in the conductivity was found at 20 mol% Er2O3. (Bi2O3)0.8.(Er2O3)0.20 is found to be the best oxygen ion conductor so far known. The conductivity at 773 K and 973 K is 2.3 Ω−1m−1 and 37 Ω−1 m−1 respectively. These values are 2–3 times higher than the best oxygen ion conductor reported for substituted Bi2O3 systems and 50–100 times higher than those of stabilized zirconia (ZrO2)0.915(Y2O3)0.085 at corresponding temperatures.
