The magnetic susceptibility at zero applied field of single crystals of [Cr(py)3Cl3] has been measured over the temperature interval from 40 mK to 4.2 K. Magnetic ordering is found at 190 mK. This spin S=3/2 material appears to behave as a magnetic linear chain; the parameters resulting from the data analysis are J/kB=−0.044 K, 2D/kB=−0.14 K and 〈g〉=1.96. The zero-field ac susceptibilities of single crystals of two isomorphous S=3/2 trigonal compounds, [Cr(en)3]Cl3⋅3H2O and [Na(H2O)6][Cr(en)3]2Br6Cl, are reported. Antiferromagnetic ordering is found at, respectively, 124(5) and 112(5) mK. The data on [Cr(en)3]Cl3⋅3H2O may be fitted with the parameters 2D/kB=−0.091(8) K, g(parallel)=1.994(3), g⊥=1.988(3), and zJ/kB=−0.061(2) K, while the bromide may be described by 2D/kB=0.064(8) K, g(parallel)=2.001(3), g⊥=1.991(3), and zJ/kB=−0.066(6) K, where longitudinal ((parallel)) and transverse (⊥) refer to the unique crystallographic axis. The easy axis for the chloride lies parallel to the longitudinal axis, while the easy axis for the bromide lies in the transverse plane. The crystal-structure analysis of the bromide is also reported.
