Notes: The identification of mononuclear cells extracted from cutaneous tumours (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and superficial spreading melanoma) has been investigated. The relative numbers of T cells and B cells have been determined using the E-rosette test and the EAC-rosette test. The results have been compared to those of delayed hypersensitivity type reactions. Different cell distribution patterns (E/EAC ratio) have been found in the infiltrates according to the type of tumour. An immunocytochemical technique has been developed for the identification in situ of immunoglobulin-producing cells in the inflammatory infiltrates. In each case the class of immunoglobulin (IgM, IgG or IgA) has been identified and the relative frequency of Ig-producing cells has been determined. The results indicate humoral and cellular immune responses with variations attributable to the type of tumour. In weakly malignant tumours, the infiltrate is characterized by an elevated number of T lymphocytes and numerous plasma cells which secrete all classes of Ig; in highly malignant tumours it is characterized by a reduced number of both T lymphocytes (E rosette) and plasma cells which do not secrete all classes of Ig.

Notes: Diurnal fishes responded rapidly to decreased light levels during a total solar eclipse and sought shelter in the reef. Nocturnal fishes sometimes left the cover of their daytime habitats. The activity cycles of diurnal reef fishes appear to be a direct response to changes in light level.

Notes: Summary.  Asparagus virus 2 (AV 2) has been detected in all major asparagus growing areas around the world and it has been suggested that, in association with other pathogens, it might be an important factor for the condition called asparagus decline. Although AV 2 was first reported in the 70’s, only few of its biochemical characteristics have been actually studied. Some properties of an AV 2 isolate from Guanajuato, Mexico were characterized and its RNA3 cloned and sequenced. Electrophoretic analysis of AV 2 RNA showed 3 genomic RNAs (RNA1. 3.0; RNA2 2.7; and RNA3 2.3 kb) and a fourth, subgenomic, RNA4 of 1.1 kb. In vitro translation data confirmed that coat protein is produced by translation of the subgenomic RNA4, as reported for other bromoviruses. Sequence analysis of AV 2 RNA3 showed two open reading frames identified by sequence comparisons and immunological assays as coding the movement and coat proteins (MP and CP, respectively). AV 2 CP showed a high percentage of identity with the CPs from other members of the subgroup II of the ilarvirus genus. The percentage of identity with other ilarviruses decreased dramatically and in some cases was lower than the values obtained with members of different genera.

Notes: Abstract Copper mining activities are very important in central Chile.Like other metals, copper is a nutrient for most plants at lowconcentration levels; however, at higher levels it may becometoxic. At present, copper abundance in mediterraneanecosystems is unknown both for vegetation and soils. In thisstudy, two localities of the Coastal Range in central Chilewere studied. Copper content was found to be mainly related tosite type, and secondly to the components of the ecosystem.Copper contents are similar to other mediterranean ecosystemsof the world. Soil was found to represent the main source ofdata variation.
