Notes: A new diagnostic that is useful for checking the algorithmic correctness of Monte Carlo computer programs is presented. The check is made by comparing the Boltzmann temperature, which is input to the program and used to accept or reject moves, with a configurational temperature kBTconfig=|∇qΦ|2/∇q2Φ. Here, Φ is the potential energy of the system and ∇q represents the dimensionless gradient operator with respect to the particle positions q. We show, using a simulation of Lennard-Jones particles, that the configurational temperature rapidly and accurately tracks changes made to the input temperature even when the system is not in global thermodynamic equilibrium. Coding and/or algorithm errors can be detected by checking that the input temperature and Tconfig agree. The effects of system size and continuity of Φ and its first derivative on Tconfig are also discussed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The use of oestrogens in the treatment of genuine stress incontinence was assessed by a double-blind prospective trial in 36 postmenopausal women with genuine stress incontinence who received 3 months of cyclical treatment with either piperazine oestrone sulphate or a matching placebo. Patients were assessed subjectively and objectively before and after treatment by 7-day bladder charts, urethral pressure profiles (UPP), the Urilos nappy test, vaginal cytology and hormone assays (plasma oestrogens and gonadotrophins). There was no statistical difference in the subjective response to treatment between the two groups. After 6 weeks of treatment there was a greater reduction in the number of pad changes/24 h in the oestrogen-treated patients that approached statistical significance but, because of a marked response in the placebo group, this difference was not significant after 3 months of treatment. There were also no significant differences between the two groups with respect to the UPP or Urilos measurements but the vaginal cytology and hormone profiles were significantly affected by oestrogens. In view of the possible risks of oestrogen therapy its use in genuine stress incontinence is limited.

Notes: The diffuse x-ray scattering intensity from a single crystal of Cu3Au was measured in a volume of reciprocal space at a temperature of 703 K, approximately 35 K above the transition temperature for ordering in this alloy. Intensity was measured in absolute units and was separated into components due to short-range order (SRO) and atomic displacements. The SRO parameters determined agree qualitatively with previous experimenters but agree best in magnitude with the original study by Cowley [J. Appl. Phys. 21, 24 (1950)]. Computer simulations of the structure, based on the SRO parameters, show that atoms with ordered environments tend to cluster into small domains that have dimensions of 1–10 unit cells in length and are surrounded by a disordered matrix. The average displacements of near-neighbor pairs were found to be contrary to what has previously been assumed: Au-Au neighbors were found to have negative displacements on average and Au-Cu pairs positive displacements, compared to the average interatomic displacements.

Notes: The passivation of zinc acceptors in InP has been observed, originally in zinc-doped InGaAs/InP heterostructures. Evidence is presented to show that hydrogen, which has been detected by secondary ion mass spectrometry, is responsible for the phenomenon and that the source of atomic hydrogen is the arsine used in the epitaxial process. The hydrogen is bound within the epitaxial layers during the cooling down stage after growth is complete.

Notes: This paper discusses a survey of users of contaminated-land information and guidance. The survey was designed to assist in the understanding of user needs in the context of the developing risk-based approach to decision-making. Environment Agency staff, local authority officers, consultants and specialists within major industrial companies contributed. The results suggest that, whilst highly qualified in their specific environmental and scientific disciplines, people are faced with many issues (in relation to contaminated land) with insufficient technical background and assistance. The potential impact of such deficiencies is discussed, together with possible solutions.
