Notes: Brillouin spectra of liquid toluene have been measured between 288 and 358 K using a dynamic light scattering technique. The polarized spectra have been modeled according to Mountain's theory. The most relevant quantity of the theory, namely the relaxation time, has been used to check the validity of several molecular models proposed to interpret vibrational–translational energy exchanges observed in nonassociated liquids. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary ¶ Objective. We analyse the clinical aspects, results and reliability of posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP) carried out as treatment for the principal symptoms and treatment induced complications in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).  Patients and Methods. Between August 1995–January 1998, 17 patients with PD were treated surgically, 13 patients with PVP. A pre- and post-surgical clinical evaluation was carried out. Riechert's Stereotactic System (MHT, Freiburg, Germany) was used. Ventriculography under stereotactic conditions was used in the PVP procedures, Laitinen's co-ordinates as anatomical target, and electrical stimulation for physiological determination. 3–4 radiofrequency lesions were made at 83°C for 20″. The mean age was 60±10.8 years, ages ranging from 45–79 years. 8 (60.5%) of the patients were male. The cardinal symptoms of the series were bradykinesia and rigidity. The duration of the illness ranged from 8.6±3.7 years with a range of 4–15 years. 7 (53.8%) presented with a duration of 10 years or more. 6 (46,2%) of the patients underwent left PVP, the remaining 7 (53.8%) right PVP. Only one patient received treatment with right PVP and ipsilateral thalamotomy in the same surgical procedure. The mean post-surgical follow up was 16±7 months, with a range of 2 to 26 months.  Results. An up to date evaluation was carried out on all patients showing significant changes after PVP in UPDRS motor (P〈0.005), complete rigidity relief (P〈0.005), bradykinesia relief (P〈0.005) and complete tremor relief (P〈0.005). An important improvement in contralateral dyskinesia was noted after PVP. A subjective evaluation of the results showed excellent results in 4 (30.8%) patients, good in 6 (46.2%) and fair in 3 (23%). No significant correlation was found between age and duration of illness (P=0.7). Two patients suffered slight side effects, one patient with worsening of hypophonia whilst the other suffered subjective visual impairment controlled by normal post operative ophthalmological examinations. There was no peri-operative mortality.  Conclusion. PVP is considered a safe and effective surgical method for the treatment of both the principal symptoms of PD and the complications of DOPA medication.

Notes: Abstract Between March 1992 and January 1998, 100 stereotactic procedures were carried out in our Stereotactic Department. Of these, 24 were performed on patients under 18 years of age, 22 of them under a local anaesthetic and sedation. The ages of these patients ranged between 4 months and 18 years. The stereotactic procedures carried out were: 15 cerebral biopsies, 5 iodine-125 implants, 4 implantations of Rickham reservoirs with ventricular catheter, with additional holes to establish a connection between the cyst content and the ventricular system (internal drainage): 2 of these patients had arachnoidal cysts in the pineal region, 1 a thalamic neuroepithelial cyst and 1 a cystic craniopharyngioma, with excellent control of hydrocephalus. All cerebral biopsies were positive, including 3 in which brain stem tumours were detected. Of the 5 patients treated by brachytherapy, 4 had pilocytic astrocytomas and 1 an anaplastic astrocytoma. The sites of the tumours for which implants were used were the thalamus in 4 cases, and the basal ganglia (corpus striatum) in 1. In only 2 cases was there some transistory morbidity, and mortality was nil. The stereotactic procedures in this varied group were well tolerated, with low morbidity and mortality rates, which proves that this method is effective and safe for patients. It can also be used for the diagnosis of brain stem tumours. Midline cysts can also be treated by means of internal drainage with catheters (a minimally invasive form of surgery).

Notes: Abstract Somatic hybrid plants produced by protoplast fusion between tetraploid Medicago sativa (2n= 4x=32) and the diploid species Medicago coerulea (2n= 2x=16) have been RFLP fingerprinted to establish their nuclear composition. Although all of the chromosomes were present, molecular analysis revealed an incomplete incorporation of the alleles of the diploid parent in the fusion products. In the polycross progeny the alleles of both parents segregated in a Mendelian mode. Cytological observations indicated that in the somatic hybrid population minor abnormalities are present; these are restricted mainly to the formation of univalents and lagging chromosomes. Meiosis appeared to be more stable than has been previously reported in the hexaploids of alfalfa. The somatic hybrids grown in the field had a rather vigorous aspect, particularly with respect to the vegetative organs. Forage yield was comparable to that of thmore productive parent. The results are discussed with a view to utilizing the somatic hybrids as starting material for breeding alfalfa at the hexaploid level.

Notes: Abstract  Feulgen/DNA cytophotometric determinations carried out in the root meristem of seedlings showed that substantial quantitative alterations in the nuclear genome are present between and within 15 natural populations of Dasypyrum villosum in Italy. When the most variant values are considered, there is a 17.6% difference between the mean genome size of the populations, and a 66.2% difference between the genome size of individual plants within a population. A highly significant, positive correlation was found to exist between the genome size of D. villosum plants and the altitude of their stations, and differences in DNA contents between individual plants were greater in populations from mountain sites. Karyological analyses showed all chromosome pairs to differ largely in size between plants with differing DNA contents. A highly significant, positive correlation was found to exist between genome size and both the length of the chromosome complement at metaphase and the length and arm ratio of pair VII. Significant correlations were also found between DNA content and certain phenotypic characteristics of the plants. The mean genome size of the populations was negatively correlated with the mean leaf length and width. In contrast, the genome size of individual plants was positively correlated with the weight of the seed from which they originated and their flowering interval. A large range of genome sizes was found in the half-sib progeny of a plant having a relatively large genome. In contrast, in the half-sib progeny of a plant having a small genome, the genome sizes of the individual plants were less divergent and similar to that of the mother plant. All siblings from crosses between plants with differing genome sizes had similar DNA contents, which were intermediate between those of the parental plants, even if closer to the DNA content of the parent plant having the smaller genome size. Size polymorphism within pairs was never observed in plants obtained from these crosses or in half-sibs whose genome size differed from that of the mother plant. The intraspecific alterations observed in the nuclear genome and their effects on plant development and phenotype are briefly discussed as evolutionary factors which allow D. villosum populations to withstand different environmental conditions as well as the variability of conditions in a given environment.

Notes: Abstract A generalization of pseudo-diffusion processes in media with anisotropic scattering, described by a coupled RW, is done by means of the CTRW theory. The behaviour of the probability distribution has been studied. A kind of phase breaking in such a behaviour arises as a function of the anisotropic parameter. Some examples, with different models for the waiting time density, are presented. In the limit of strong forward or backward scattering, we have a new way to analyze quasi-unidirectional or quasi-collapsed processes respectively.
