Notes: Although Telemachus is not the chief character of the Odyssey, his part in the plot is of considerable importance, and in one way he seems to be unique. For he is, perhaps, the only character in Greek literature who shows any development. All the other people who appear in Homer are already fully grown and, as characters, static. For in an epic it is the story which is of first importance, and the people can be adequately described by one major trait. In Greek tragedy, also, where no doubt character is of greater moment and occupies a larger proportion of the whole, we never see the characters growing as time passes. For there was a continual obstacle to the development of character on the tragic stage from a rather unexpected quarter—the Chorus. As H. C. Baldry says, ‘Because of the chorus, a fifth-century tragedy could not easily be a serial drama, leaping from incident to incident and place to place... such plays leave no scope for the development of character. The hero's nature may be revealed to the audience step by step, but in most of the extant tragedies it does not change.’

Notes: [Auszug] PERCEPTION, in man, is the act of deriving some meaning or message from signals transmitted to the brain from the sense organs. It consists of detection, in a, set of simultaneous or sequential signals, of sets of interrelations among the signals, whiob we may call 'patterns'. The human brain, ...

Notes: Summary The occurrence, by years, ofE. parva in Alberta rodents is presented in tabular form covering the period 1946 to 1959. The infection rate was 5.1.% in 1946, 3.3% in 1957 and less than 1% thereafter. It was found that the lungs of Alberta rodents have a characteristic mold flora comprised chiefly of:Penicillium spp., Beauveria bassiana, Aspergillus spp. and perhapsScopulariopsis brevicaule, Cladosporium spp. andChrysosporium pannorum. Trichophyton mentagrophytes and anotherTrichophyton were isolated from the livers, spleens or lungs of six rodents. Phycomyces blakesleeanus was isolated from the lungs of two rodents trapped in northern Alberta.

Notes: Summary Microsporum nanum Fuentes was isolated from a ringworm lesion on the back of the hand of a seven year old Alberta schoolgirl. This is the first record ofM. nanum in Canada and the first infection reported from the northern part of the temperate zone.

Notes: Abstract Replicates of whole colonies of four species of closely related dermatophytes were analyzed by pyrolysis gas-liquid chromatography (PGLC). The four species included fifteen strains of Arthroderma tuberculatum, and two strains each of A. benhamiae, Nannizzia gypsea and N. incurvata. Individual/peaks on different pyrograms were identified as homologous with the aid of internal markers by the superimposition of pyrograms. The peak height data extracted from the pyrograms of the fungal samples were analyzed to compute average similarities between pairs of pyrograms. The average was calculated with each peak weighted equally, and log weighted for its information content. The results of the cluster analyses of proximities were generally similar. Most, but not all, replicates of each strain were similar enough to be clustered together. Some strains belonging to the same species were also similar enough to be grouped in one cluster. Other strains of a single species varied sufficiently to be put in separate clusters. The nearest neighbour to each OTU (pyrogram) was always a replicate of the same strain.
