    Notes: Abstract— Microstructure and mechanical properties of HP (Hot Pressed), HP/GP (Gas Pressed), and HP/HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressed)—Si3N4 are studied using scanning electron microscopy, bending tests and the indentation fracture method. The grain diameter distribution is analyzed to clarify the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties; and also the bending strength and fracture toughness. It is shown that bending strength increases with decreasing grain diameter. The results also show that a Hall—Petch type of relationship is obtained between grain diameter and fracture strength. The fracture toughness shows a linear relationship with 〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:8756758X:FFE829:FFE_829_fu1" location="image_n/FFE_829_fu1.gif" extraInfo="missing"/〉, where σF= bending strength, β= a proportionality factor and da= average grain diameter, and is closely related to the aspect ratio of Si3N4 grains. It is concluded, from the morphological analysis, that a microstructure composed of Si3N4 grains, with both a small grain diameter and a large aspect ratio, is effective in improving both the fracture strength and fracture toughness.

    Notes: Abstract Fifteen kinds of mullite/SiC samples with different microstructures were prepared in order to examine the effect of Sic volume% and Sic grain size on mullite morphology and mechanical properties. Special attention was paid to the effect of heat-treatment on fracture stress. It is shown that these materials have damage self-healing characteristics. The best mullite/SiC system, within the given test conditions, is 20% by volume of Sic, having a grain sue of 0.56 μm, and the best condition for damage healing is a 1 h heat treatment at 1300°C in an air atmosphere.

    Notes: Ceramic composite crucibles failed when they were operated under extreme conditions of temperature and heating rate. To analyze the failure causes, fracture stress and fracture toughness values were ascertained and previously reported. Moreover, a new failure criterion for ceramics was proposed based on the existence of a crack-tip process zone. A probabilistic failure assessment curve was proposed to evaluate quantitatively the reliability of ceramics.By using the above data and theories, a fracture and severity analysis for crucibles has been completed. Some manufacturing techniques are proposed to improve reliability during service.

    Notes: Si3 N4 /SiC composite ceramics were sintered and subjected to three-point bending on specimens made according to the appropriate JIS standard. A semi-circular surface crack of 110 μm in diameter was made on each specimen. By using three kinds of specimen (smooth, cracked and crack healed), crack-healing behaviour, cyclic and static fatigue strengths were determined systematically at room temperature and 1000 °C. The main conclusions are as follows: (i) Si3 N4 /SiC composite ceramics have the ability to heal after cracking; (ii) crack-healed specimens showed similar cyclic and static fatigue strengths as smooth specimens, this being caused by crack healing; (iii) crack-healed zones had a sufficient fatigue strength and most fractures occurred outside the pre-cracked zone in those crack-healed specimens.

    Notes: Generally, fracture toughness and fracture stress of ceramics depend on crack length, notch root radius and grain size. These three parameters are most important when assessing the integrity of structural ceramic members and developing high-performance ceramics. A new failure criterion called the process zone size failure criterion, has been proposed based on the existence of a crack-tip process zone. Using this criterion, it is shown that theoretical values are in good agreement with many test results quoted from many papers. It is concluded that this failure criterion is useful when evaluating crack length and notch root radius problems. The effect of grain size on both the fracture toughness and on the toughening mechanism is also considered.

    Notes: Alumina/silicon carbide (Al2O3/SiC) composite ceramics with large self-crack-healing ability, high strength and high heat-resistance limit temperature for strength were developed and subjected to three-point bending. A semicircular surface crack 100 μm in diameter was made on each sample. Crack-healing behaviour was systematically studied, as functions of crack-healing temperature and healing time, and the fatigue strengths of the crack-healed sample at room temperature and 1373 K were investigated. Four main conclusions were drawn from the present study. (1) Al2O3/SiC composite ceramics have the ability to heal after cracking from 1273to 1673 K in air. (2) The heat-resistance limit temperature for strength of the crack-healed sample is ≅1573 K, and ≅68% of the samples fractured from outside the crack-healed zone in the testing-temperature range 873–1573 K. (3) The crack-healed sample exhibited very high fatigue limit at room temperature and also 1373 K. (4) The large self-crack-healing ability is a desirable technique for the high structural integrity of ceramic component.

    Notes: The present contribution reports the unlubricated friction and wear properties of Ti3SiC2 against steel. The fretting experiments were performed under varying load (1–10 N) and the detailed wear mechanism is studied using SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Under the selected fretting conditions, Ti3SiC2/steel tribocouple exhibits a transition in friction as well as wear behavior with coefficient of friction varying between 0.5 and 0.6 and wear rate in the order of 10−5 mm3·(N·m)−1. Raman analysis reveals that the fretting wear is accompanied by the triboxidation with the formation of TiO2, SiO2, and Fe2O3. A plausible explanation for the transition in friction and wear with load is proposed.
