Notes: Abstract A brief review of recent research and development works of some advanced Ti alloys and Ni base superalloys in the Institute of Aeronautical Materials, Beijing (BIAM) is reported. In which, the tensile deformation and fracture characteristics in an α-β Ti alloy, the creep behavior of Ti3Al intermetallic alloy and effect of heat treatment and crystal orientation on the creep properties of a single crystal Ni base alloys DD3, are presented. The applications of the above mentioned alloys in aeronautic industry are described.

Notes: Abstract The γ ↔ α2 phase transformation in fractured high temperature stress rupture Ti-48Al-2Nb(at.%) alloy has been studied by analytical electron microscopy. α2 and γ phases were found at grain boundaries. α2 layers that suspended in γ layers and interfacial ledge higher than 2d (111)γ at γ/α2 interfaces were observed in the lamellar grains. These facts indicated that γ ↔ α2 phase transformation and dynamic recrystallization have occurred during high temperature stress rupture deformation. It can be concluded that deformation induced γ ↔ α2 phase transformation and dynamic recrystallization resulted in the presence of γ particles at grain boundaries. A structural and compositional transition area between deformation-induced α2(or γ) and its adjacently original γ(or α2) phases was found by HREM and EDS and is suggested as a way to transform between γ and α2 phase during high temperature stress rupture deformation. The transition area was formed by slide of partial dislocations on close-packed planes and diffusion of atoms.

Notes: Abstract By means of three-dimensional crystallite orientation distribution function (CODF) analysis, the relationship between texture control processes and mechanical properties anisotropy in titanium sheet has been investigated. The formation and transition of cold-rolling texture, recrystallization texture and phase transformation texture are also discussed. The results show that, after being cold rolled unidirectionally and annealed, titanium sheet exhibits a strong anisotropy of mechanical properties due to the pyramidal textures (2 1 1 5) [0 1 1 ] and (1 0 1 3) [1 2 1 0]. After a cyclic phase transformation process coupled with cold rolling and annealing treatment, the recrystallization texture component (1 0 1 3) [1 2 1 0] is suppressed and [h k i l] 9∥ND transformation fibre texture (where ND is the sheet normal direction) are developed, which produce a well improved mechanical anisotropy. The cross-rolling process can create a basal type texture (0 0 0 2) 〈u v t w〉 or a near basal type texture, which leads to low level planar mechanical properties anisotropy but to relatively high normal plastic anisotropy (R value).
