Notizen: Abstract Anticardiolipin antibodies were determined in 29 diabetic children and adolescents, aged 3.9–26.8 years, with disease duration from 1 month to 19 years. Anti-islet cell antibodies (ICA-IgG and CF-ICA), anti-insulin antibodies (IAA), antithyroid antibodies and non organ-specifc (NOSA) antibodies were also determined. Patients were grouped according to insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) duration: group I (n=11)〈6 months, and group II (n=18)〉5 years. Eleven of group II patients showed precocious signs of micro-angiopathic complications. Forty-two age- and sex-matched healthy subjects served as controls. IgG and IgM anticardiolipin antibodies were evaluated by ELISA and their results expressed as arbitrary units (AU). IgG anticardiolipin antibodies were found in 7 patients (24%), while IgM anticardiolipin antibodies were absent in all. IgG anticardiolipin antibodies were more frequent in IDDM patients than in controls (P〈0.005) and group I (in 6 out of 11 patients; 54.5%) than in group II (in 1 out of 18 patients; 5.5%) (P〈0.025). In five out of six group I patients with IgG anticardiolipin antibodies, ICA-IgG and/or CF-ICA were also found. No correlation was observed between anticardiolipin and other auto-antibodies, micro-angiopatic complications, and HLA typing.

Notizen: Abstract The safety aspects of a fusion reactor fuel cycle, which handles substantial quantities of tritium, have been assessed in the framework of the European Programme on Safety and Environmental Assessment of Fusion Power Long Term (SEAL). This study focused on the assessment of the tritium inventory that could be released from interlinked systems in accidental scenarios. A systematic review of the fuel cycle systems was performed by focusing attention on the main interfaces and to the possible propagation of accident sequences through these interfaces. For the bounding accident sequences identified, deterministic analyses were carried out to determine the accident consequences. Both process source terms (PST) and environmental source terms (EST) were estimated. Simultaneous failure of the primary and secondary containment was considered to be beyond the design basis, nevertheless a preliminary analysis has been carried out; a bounding accident sequence related to a double failure, involving a hydrogen fire, has led to a tritium environmental release of 5.3 g and the wall mechanical load deriving from the maximum hypoth-esizable hydrogen detonation has been defined. Tritium releases into the secondary containment are treated by the appropriate detritiation and by the vent detritiation system. The related EST has been estimated based on an overall tritium cleanup efficiency of 99%, deliberately chosen low to cause the EST to be overestimated. The maximum tritium environmental release is less than 11 g and corresponds to an in-vessel LOCA. For accidents initiating in the fuel cycle only, the maximum tritium release is at most 3.1 g.

Notizen: Abstract This paper summarizes several investigations on the identification of possible multiple failure accidents relevant in terms of consequences for the SEAFP reactor. Particularly, on those sequences of events that could induce a risk of radioactive materials bypass through the SEAFP confinement barriers. The analyses here reported are related to the Heat Transfer Systems of both reactor models 1 and 2. The work is carried out within the Safety and Environmental Assessment of Fusion Power—Long Term Programme (SEAL) 95/96. A set of specific initiating events (IEs) has been individuated, on the basis of the previous studies performed in the frame of the first SEAFP program. Basing on pre-existing analyses, each accident initiator has been discussed and several sequences have been described depending on the additional failures which could follow the initiator.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of piroxicam therapy (20 mg/day for 15 days) on various polymorphonuclear granulocyte (PMN) responses and on PMN elastase concentration was investigated in nine patients with active rheumatoid arthritis. Peripheral biood and synovial fluid samples were collected before starting therapy and 12 h after the last dose of the drug. All patients were evaluable for peripheral blood analysis and six for synovial fluid analysis. Piroxicam therapy had no effect on PMN random migration and phagocytosis, while it significantly reduced both FMLP-induced aggregation and FMLP-induced chemotaxis. This seems mainly due to an effect on FMLP binding, as no differences were observed after therapy in PMA- and PHA-induced aggregation as well as in serum-induced chemotaxis. In contrast, a marked impairment of NBT test and PMA- and FMLP-induced superoxide anion (O2 −) production was found after piroxicam therapy. This effect was as evident in peripheral blood as in synovial fluid PMN. Also, a significant reduction in synovial fluid PMN number and synovial fluid PMN elastase concentration (elastase-α 1-proteinase complex) was found after treatment. It is concluded that piroxicam may act at different sites on various PMN responses-Its effect on O2 − generation and PMN elastase concentration in synovial fluid may have an important role in reducing destruction of arthritic joint tissue.

Notizen: Summary In 28 postmenopausal women with rheumatoid arthritis, serum osteocalcin (OC) concentration decreased from 5.2±1.9 ng/ml to 3.0±1.6 ng/ml after 6 months therapy with corticosteroids (p〈0.005). No differences, however, were found in a control group of 13 patients treated for 6 months with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In those patients with serial OC measurements, changes in serum OC were already evident within the first month of therapy. This suggests that a suppressed osteoblast function may be detectable early during corticosteroid therapy in rheumatoid arthritis. Fifteen patients treated with prednisone (5–25 mg once daily, mean 12.33 mg/day) showed a more marked decrease in serum OC than 13 patients treated with equivalent doses of deflazacort (p〈0.005). Prednisone therapy at doses higher than 10 mg/day resulted in a severe suppression of OC values in most cases. The effect of deflazacort was, however, mild in the majority of patients treated with doses of up to 30 mg/day.
