Notes: Summary. Vertical starch gel electrophoresis was used to separate components of neutral salt soluble (NSS) and acid soluble (AS) collagens, and of eucollagens, from muscle, skin and tendon of bovines of different age. The relative proportions of the separated components were assessed spectrophotometrically. The electrophoretograms indicated that the greater difficulties of extraction which distinguish AS from NSS collagen reflect a greater measure of cross-bonding between the α chains of the former. They also indicated that there was a marked increase in the proportion of components having intramolecular cross bonds, in both NSS and AS collagens and in the three tissues studied, between the 5th and 9th month of gestation. In older animals there were also indications of an enhanced degree of intermolecular cross bonding.Such changes help explain the increased toughness of the meat from older bovines despite a lower percentage of collagen.

Notes: Summary. The changes with animal age in the concentrations of five forms of collagen of differing solubility characteristics were followed in bovine l. dorsi, skin and tendon. Those forms which were extractable in neutral salt and dilute acid were found to increase swiftly during the gestation period and fall to low levels between birth and 1–2 years of age in the three tissues. After birth there was a rapid rise in the concentrations of the more insoluble forms of collagen and these greatly predominated by 1–2 years of age in each tissue. The relative time relations of the changes were compatible with a transformation of the easily extractable forms into the more insoluble ones with increasing age.In muscular tissue only, after about 2 years of age, there was some diminution in total collagen and also in the proportion of the latter which resisted extraction. Possible reasons were discussed.

Notes: Two groups of patients receiving cyclosporin A (CyA) for psoriasis had their renal function assessed by measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF). The first group comprised 13 patients who had taken low dose (average 3 mg/kg per day) CyA for an average period of 25 years. Seven of the 13 had a normal GFR of 108 (77–121) ml/min (median; range). In the other six patients the GFR was low at 63 (50–77) ml/min and CyA was discontinued for periods ranging from 3 to 17 weeks. The GFR rose in all six patients, to 79 (60–91) ml/min; this change was significant (P〈o05). The six patients restarted CyA because their psoriasis recurred and after a mean interval of 15 weeks the GFR had fallen in all six to 63 (46–80) ml/min (P 〈0·05) and the ERPF decreased from 339 (231–414) ml/min to 244 (177–321) ml/min (P 〈0.05). In the second group of 11 patients measurements were made prior to starting CyA and after taking CyA for a mean of 9 weeks. The GFR fell in eight out of 11 subjects, the GFR for the 11 patients being 117 (72–128) ml/min before taking CyA and 97 (51–122) ml/min after CyA (P 〈0·02). The ERPF was measured in nine of the 11 patients and fell in seven of the nine. The ERPF for the nine patients before CyA was 490 (296–642) ml/min and for the II patients after CyA was 410 (195–543) ml/min (P〈0·01). This study shows that impairment of renal function is reversible in patients with psoriasis after long-term dosage with CyA. However, this impairment may occur after short- as well as long-term treatment.

Notes: A case of prolonged action of suxamethonium in a patient with gestational trophoblastic disease is reported. Postoperatively the patient was found to have markedly reduced plasma cholinesterase activity (363 IU/litre) with a normal cholinesterase phenotype. Consequently plasma cholinesterase activity and phenotype were measured in six other patients with the condition and these results compared with those of 22 patients with normal first trimester pregnancies undergoing therapeutic abortion. Plasma cholinesterase phenotype was normal in all patients studied. The activity was significantly decreased (p 〈 0.05) from the normal range (620–1370 lU/litre) in all patients with trophoblastic disease. In the 22 patients with normal pregnancies, 14 had activity values in the abnormal range (〈 620 IU/litre) while the mean cholinesterase activity of the group as a whole was significantly decreased (561.8 IU/litre, p 〈 0.05) below the normal range. These results confirm the presence of a decrease in plasma cholinesterase activity in early pregnancy and provide new evidence for a decrease in activity in a pseudopregnancy state.

Notes: Abstract Mineral equilibria in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O provide a basis for mapping of four reaction isograds and one bathograd in the low-pressure transition from subgreenschist to greenschist facies. Most of the Matachewan area of the Abitibi greenstone belt is in the lower-pressure bathozone, as indicated by the widespread occurrences of the subassemblage Prh–Chl. The higher-pressure bathozone is indicated by two occurrences of Pmp–Act–Ep–Qtz, but in these samples the bathograd is displaced to anomalously low pressure by the high Fe content of the coexisting minerals. This illustrates the need to analyse coexisting minerals, calculate activities of end-member species, and compute P–T curves for individual samples before interpreting the isograd/bathograd pattern.Petrographic and microprobe analysis indicates that great care must be taken in the selection of ‘equilibrium’ assemblages. Pyroxene phenocrysts in one sample are replaced by the assemblage Pmp–Act–Ep–Chl–Qtz, whereas Prh–Act–Ep–Chl–Qtz occurs in the groundmass. Compositional variation may be more cryptic, as in a sample of metabasaltic hyaloclastite that contains two spatially distinct ‘univariant’ assemblages, Prh–Pmp–Ep–Chl–Qtz and Prh–Act–Ep–Chl–Qtz, within the devitrified matrix. Whereas chlorite compositions are similar in both assemblages, prehnite and epidote in the latter assemblage are significantly richer in Fe and poorer in Al. Accordingly, the rock is interpreted to contain two distinct ‘univariant’ assemblages, rather than one ‘invariant’ assemblage (Prh–Pmp–Act–Ep–Chl–Qtz). The displaced ‘univariant’ curves for this sample intersect at 2.2 kbar and 250°C.Taking account of all thermobarometric implications, the low-grade limit of the greenschist facies is at 250–270°C and 2–2.5 kbar, corresponding to depths of 7–8 km. Comparison of apparent P–T conditions on both sides of the Larder Lake – Cadillac break, a regional CO2-metasomatized fault zone that is spatially associated with many Archaean gold deposits, provides an upper limit of not more than c. 1 km for post-metamorphic south-side-up, dip-slip displacement.

Notes: Quality differences in processed vegetables can be controlled with high pressure steam blanching (HTST). In addition, HTST blanching required significantly less energy to blanch vegetables than water blanching. HTST-blanched vegetables displayed quality parameters distinctly different than water-blanched vegetables. Differences in quality parameters were highly dependent upon the vegetable being blanched and the pressure and time of the HTST blanch. The quality of vegetables were similar between water and HTST blanching treatments, but by controlling the pressure and time of the HTST blanch, quality characteristics could be changed to meet individual requirements. High quality frozen vegetables can be produced with HTST steam blanching but quality is dependent upon the particular vegetable and pressure and time of the HTST steam blanch.
