Notes: A novel resonant method based on a tunnel-diode oscillator is used to study the dynamic transverse susceptibility in a Fe nanoparticle system. The magnetic system consists of an aggregate of nanometer-size core (Au)-shell (Fe) structure, synthesized by reverse micelle methods. Static and dynamic magnetization measurements carried out in order to characterize the system reveal a superparamagnetic behavior at high temperature. The field-dependent transverse susceptibility at radio-frequencies for different temperatures reveals distinct peak structure at characteristics fields (±HK,HC) which changes with temperature. It is proposed that relaxation processes could explain the influence of the temperature on the field dependence of the transverse susceptibility. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this article, metallic iron, and iron/platinum alloys nanoparticles have been synthesized via chemical assembly and magnetically characterized. Fabrication of iron and iron/platinum particles was achieved by reducing 0.1 M aqueous metal salts confined in the polar portions of inverse micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with borohydride. The dc susceptibility of a sample of 8 nm iron nanoparticles exhibits a blocking temperature of 54 K and coercivity of 200 G at 10 K. The presence of the gold coatings prevented oxidation and allowed the samples to be manipulated without additional precautions to prevent oxidation. Two iron/platinum alloys have been synthesized and verified by x-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetic characterization is performed using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electrical resistance measurements have been performed on samples of Cd1−xZnxTe (0≤x〈0.50) as a function of pressure up to 7.0 GPa. Based on a multidecade decrease in the resistance, the transition pressure of the B3 to B1 phase change is observed to increase from 3.3 to 6.7 GPa as x increases from 0 to 0.49. An anomalous drop in the resistance is observed to precede this transition; the magnitude of this drop increases with increasing x up to x=0.45, where it takes the form of a local minimum in the resistivity. The origin of this anomaly is not understood, but it is presumed to be similar to the local resistance minimum previously reported in ZnTe.

Notes: An improvement to the modified Debye–Scherrer camera is described which allows for the accurate determination of the lattice parameter for thin films. The x-ray collimator assembly has been altered to allow the thin film sample to cut the x-ray beam in half at zero angle of incidence resulting in a "D'' spot on the x-ray film. The lattice parameter of an aluminum film was measured using this modified camera and compared with that determined by an x-ray diffractometer scan and the published value. The results agree within 3 mA(ring). An additional method using difference angles is also described which can be employed when the origin has not been determined.

Notes: This paper describes a numerical method of solution for wave propagation in a medium whose elastic parameters and density vary with depth in any specified way. Results for a simple two layer problem are given to illustrate the method, and the extension to problems of current geophysical interest is briefly discussed.

Notes: This paper deals with the four electrode method of electrical resistivity prospecting using direct current. It is shown that three resistances can be measured for any four electrode configuration, and a simple relation between them is derived. The particular case of the Wenner electrode configuration is discussed and a further relation derived between the three apparent resistivities corresponding to the three resistances. The practical value of the -resistance relation as a means of avoiding experimental errors is indicated. In general the three apparent resistivities are different in magnitude although there are certain particular cases where they are equal to one another. Their actual values are determined for a number of simple problems and the possibility of having a negative apparent resistivity is illustrated. Finally, examples of field tests are given in which the three resistances were measured, and it is concluded that the method can often provide a simple way of distinguishing between the effects of lateral and vertical resistivity variations.

Notes: The safety and efficacy of oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC) as a preanaesthetic medication were evaluated in 42 children aged two to twelve years scheduled to undergo general anaesthesia for open cardiac surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo lozenge or a lozenge of 15–20 μg·kg−1) OTFC 45 min preoperatively and were managed in a double-blinded manner. Heart rate, respiratory rate (RR), blood pressure, and digital pulse oximetry (Spo2) were monitored throughout the study. Scoring systems were utilized to evaluate sedation, anxiety, cooperation, and ease and quality of parental separation and anaesthetic induction. Adverse effects were noted. Preoperatively, sedation was observed in both groups, but children receiving OTFC had significantly less distress at time of separation from parents. Clinically significant decreases in RR and Spo2 were observed more frequently in children in the OTFC group than in the placebo group. The authors conclude that, in paediatric cardiac surgical patients, OTFC induces preoperative sedation and facilitates separation of the patients from their parents, but is associated with decreases in respiratory rate and Spo2 that may be of clinical importance.

Notes: [Auszug] It is generally considered that the majority of seismic noise consists of surface waves, a characteristic of which is that their amplitude decreases approximately exponentially with depth2. The first arrivals at a recording site at distance between 200 and 1,000 km. from a shallow event are Pn ...
