    Notes: This paper presents logic, procedures, validity, and use of employee attitude surveys targeted on strategic objectives of the firm. The logic is that employees at the front line are in an optimal position to report on the degree to which strategic initiatives are being carried out. The procedure is to design survey questions that focus on the initiative rather than on employees' personal feelings or satisfaction. To validate employee reports, the relationships between those reports and customer satisfaction over four quarters of the use of the survey are shown. Evidence shows that the logical and empirical keying of employee surveys to strategic initiatives and objectives of the firm provide data of immediate use to management, in the present case to both marketing and human resources management.

    Notes: The overall purpose of research for any profession is to discover the truth of the discipline This paper examines the controversy over the methods by which truth is obtained, by examining the differences and similarities between quantitative and qualitative research The historically negative bias against qualitative research is discussed, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches, with issues highlighted by reference to nursing research Consideration is given to issues of sampling, the relationship between the researcher and subject, methodologies and collated data, validity, reliability, and ethical dilemmas The author identifies that neither approach is superior to the other, qualitative research appears invaluable for the exploration of subjective experiences of patients and nurses, and quantitative methods facilitate the discovery of quantifiable information Combining the strengths of both approaches in triangulation, if time and money permit, is also proposed as a valuable means of discovering the truth about nursing It is argued that if nursing scholars limit themselves to one method of enquiry, restrictions will be placed on the development of nursing knowledge

    Notes: The purpose of this article is to define and explain a trend that has caused a great deal of confusion among HR researchers, practitioners, and consumers of HR-related services: competency modeling. The Job Analysis and Competency Modeling Task Force, a work group jointly sponsored by the Professional Practice Committee and the Scientific Affairs Committee of the Society For Industrial and Organizational Psychology, has recently concluded a 2-year investigation into the antecedents of competency modeling and an examination of the current range of practice. Competency modeling is compared and contrasted to job analysis using a conceptual framework (reflected in a 10-dimension Level of Rigor Scale) that practitioners and researchers may use to guide future work efforts, and which could be used as a basis for developing standards for practice. The strengths and weaknesses of both competency modeling and job analysis are identified and, where appropriate, recommendations are made for leveraging strengths in one camp to shore-up weaknesses in the other.

    Notes: Abstract The chemical stability of an Asp-hexapeptide (Val-Tyr-Pro-Asp-Gly-Ala) in lyophilized formulations was evaluated as a function of multiple formulation variables–specifically pH of the bulk solution, temperature, moisture content, and type of bulking agent (amorphous vs. crystalline). The disappearance of the starting Asp-hexapeptide in the solid state conformed to pseudo-first-order reversible kinetics. This type of degradation profile was accounted for by the product distribution. The factorial experimental design of this study allowed statistical analysis of the effects of individual formulation variable (main effects) as well as those of two-factor interactions on the degradation of the Asp-hexapeptide. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) calculations of the main effects indicated that while the influence of pH of the starting solution was not statistically significant, residual moisture level, temperature, and, especially, type of bulking agent had a significant impact on the solid state chemical reactivity of the hexapeptide. Furthermore, depending on which type of excipient was used in the lyophilized formulations, residual moisture level and temperature could be important stability variables. These types of factorial experiments have proven to be useful in the rapid identification of significant formulation variables in a given system and, consequently, in optimization of formulations.

    Notes: Abstract The topic of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) compensation has been a focus of interest for many years. The purpose of this article is to explore the ethical dimensions of various generally accepted theories of CEO renumeration. We argue that a contractarian approach, based on the Kantian ethical framework, can be used to augment the existing contingent pay models. While the neoclassical economic model of the firm views the maximization of the shareholders' wealth as the sole responsibility of top management, a contractarian approach regards the balancing of various stakeholders' interests as the primary task of top management. Ethical problems emerge when there are divergent, yet equally justifiable interests which compete in order to channel organizational resources to meet their own needs. In this situation, given the inherent ambiguities and ever present possibilities of multiple perspectives, it may not always be feasible to provide a categorical answer to the question of whether the CEO's decisions are ethical. We suggest that a broad interpretation of the neoclassical theory of the firm, one that is grounded in Kantian and contractarian ethics, can serve as a basis for a reconciliation of different theories of executive compensation.

    Notes: Significant levels of cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (CINC) were found in serum-free medium conditioned by a highly metastatic rat cell line, RC20. To study CINC's role in inflammation and metastasis, CINC was purified from this source for use in in vitro assays and for antibody production in goats and rabbits. CINC was a potent chemoattractant for rat neutrophils (EC-50 0.5 nM). A fusion protein of glutathione-S-transferase and CINC (GST-CINC) was produced in E. coli. Anti-CINC polyclonal IgG was purified from immune goat and rabbit sera by protein A and GST-CINC affinity chromatography. Both goat and rabbit anti-CINC antibody preparations at 4 μg/mL (an 11-fold molar excess) were found to completely block the activity of 2.5 nM CINC in a rat neutrophil chemotaxis assay. These antibodies have been used to develop a sensitive immunoassay for CINC. The availability of large amounts of affinity-purified blocking anti-CINC antibody will allow investigations into the role played by CINC in rodent inflammation models and in the metastasis of RC20 cells. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Rat cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant (CINC) is an eight kilodalton polypeptide originally purified from media conditioned by interleukin-1β stimulated 52E, an epitheloid clone derived from normal rat kidney (NRK) cells. Using a fibroblastic clone of the NRK cells, 49F, we found expression of the CINC gene to be induced by either serum or cytokines in growth-arrested cultures within 1 hour of stimulation. There was no observable CINC expression in exponentially growing cells in the absence of cytokine stimulation. CINC protein had no significant effect on 3H-thymidine incorporation or growth rate of NRK49F. We have observed that CINC is constitutively produced by some transformed NRK cells, clone RC20, suggesting an association with the expression of a transformed phenotype. Unlike the parent 49F, RC20 cells are capable of growth in soft agar and serum-free media and form highly metastatic tumors in nude mice. We have examined the possible autocrine functions of CINC and its possible links to the expression of the transformed phenotype by these cells. The use of a blocking CINC polyclonal antibody demonstrated that CINC did not function as an autocrine growth factor for RC20. Though CINC is a potent chemoattractant for neutrophils, it did not induce migration of either RC20 or 49F cells. CINC only moderately promoted adhesion of RC20 cells when used as a matrix protein. These data do not support the hypothesis that production of CINC by the RC20 cells provides an obvious advantage for the transformed cells constitutively producing it. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
