Notes: The statistical distribution of bubbles in a 2D foam has been determined according to their area. A 2D foam chamber was designed and constructed, which allows long-term video recordings to be made. The bubbles corresponding to the last six frames, when the so-called scaling state is attained, were digitized at equally spaced time intervals, to measure their surface and count their number of neighbors. From the numerical results the empirical distribution functions are determined. Kolmogorov's compatibility criterion was used to measure the differences between these empirical and three theoretical distribution functions: the normal distribution (bad fit, but a favorite of earlier reports), the power regression (good fit), and the log normal (the best fit). © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  A novel method to characterize segregation effects in silica-zirconia materials prepared by the sol-gel method through the alkoxide route is reported. These segregation effects were studied by using the Radial Distribution Function obtained from the X-ray diffractograms. The information obtained by this technique allows one to predict the spatial distribution of one of the oxides into the other as a function of the annealing temperature and the relative concentration of both constituents. Silica and Zirconia were chosen for preparing the alloys since Si and Zr have the same oxidation state and, in spite of both ions being of different atomic radius, they do not produce distortion in the oxygen sub-lattice (due to an oxygen deficiency) which could influence the spatial distribution of both cations into the lattice.

Notes: Abstract A recently proposed technique for preparing, in a very simple way, thin film tilt grain boundaries is described and analyzed. Some electron microscopy characterization of the bicrystals is presented and a comparison between this new method and some of the standard techniques is made from a critical point of view. Some new applications of grain boundary research using this technique are also proposed.

Notes: Abstract A series of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN's) based on different compositions of an acyclic polyethylene terephthalate oligomer and unsaturated polyester resin (UP) were prepared. The oligomer was dissolved in the resin containing styrene crosslinker. Later this mixture was crosslinked at room temperature using methyl ethyl ketone peroxide catalyst and cobalt naphtanate as promoter. The tensile strength of the IPN's decreases as the concentration of oligomer increases, whereas, elongation to break increases. A characterization of the oligomer used is also presented.

Notes: Summary We have conducted observations of possible microstructure on some zwitterionic polymers by means of Transmission Electron Microscopy. Two different solvents, with very different evaporation rates, were used to dessicate the samples onto the carbon covered microscope grids. While no sign of microstructure was apparent in the samples prepared from the more volatile solvent, a well defined grainy appearance was observed in the samples obtained from the less volatile solvent. This shows that sample preparation plays an important role on microstructure formation on zwitterionic polymers.

Notes: Abstract Optical characterization is presented for a silicon oxide amorphous matrix (prepared by the sol–gel method) doped with chlorophyll. The gel fabrication procedure and the doping process are first described. Then the optical behaviour from ultraviolet to far infrared is analysed. Gel samples with and without chlorophyll are studied morphologically by SEM in order to determine the spatial homogeneity of the gel matrix and the chlorophyll distribution. Finally, a mathematical model is proposed for behaviour of the gel-doped absorption coefficient as a function of chlorophyll concentration.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) ceramic sheets with a wide range of porosities (up to 62%) have been prepared. The process is based on the reaction between dicalcium phosphate (CaHPO4) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3). When mixed with the appropriate Ca/P ratio, this proves to be a reliable new method for obtaining hydroxyapatite. Moreover, CaCO3 serves as a gas-forming agent (due to the evolution of carbon dioxide and water during the reaction), which leads to the development of highly porous microstructures. Alternatively, CaHPO4 and CaCO3 can be reacted by calcining at 1000°C to produce pure hydroxyapatite powders. When processed in a similar way, a dense ceramic results. By mixing 50 vol% of CaCO3 and CaHPO4 with precalcined powders, hydroxyapatite with an intermediate porosity was obtained. Moreover, it should be possible to achieve porosity control by mixing different amounts of uncalcined and precalcined powders. All of these powders are colloidally processed using tape casting to produce thin sheets 150–200 μm thick. This technique can be used to make laminates, with or without porosity gradients, up to several millimetres thick.
