Notizen:
Summary The authors discuss the concepts of “vigilance” and “consciousness” in the light of the latest findings of psychopathology and neurophysiology. They maintain that a state of vigilance is necessary before any conscious activity can take place, but consciousness should be considered as a higher synthesis of the whole psychic activity in which perceptions, intelligence and emotions are integrated. Following a description of the main clinical syndromes where the functions of vigilance and consciousness are particularly affected, the authors discuss the special aspects of the impairment of consciousness in endogenous psychoses, above all in schizophrenia.
