Notes: Fish cell lines have been developed and utilized since the early 1960s and a wide range of fish species are now represented in culture (Wolf and Mann 1980; Fryer and Lannan 1994). However, the fish species most often represented in cell cultures are those of significant economic importance in aquaculture. Fish cell lines were initially cultured for use as a diagnostic and research tool, particularly for diagnosis of viral diseases and research focused on them. In more recent years they have been used in the fields of toxicology, gene regulation, gene expression, DNA replication and repair, and cancer research (Fryer and Lannan 1994). The increase in fish cell use can be explained by the ease with which they can be cultured. For example, fish cell lines do quite well on a passage schedule of 7–14 d (sometimes even greater) and usually do not require a change of medium between passages. This is quite in contrast to mammalian cell cultures, which require much more time and attention (Lannan 1994).

Notes: Background:  A 1999 study in Hanoi, Vietnam using the International Study on Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire showed a high prevalence of atopic symptoms. Identifying risk factors for symptoms in these children may help in understanding the causes for these high estimates. Methods:  An ISAAC questionnaire with supplemental questions on environmental variables was distributed to 5495 school children in Hanoi and a suburban district, Dong Anh. The response rate was 65.7%.Results:  In Dong Anh, the following were among the significant age and gender adjusted associations: pig ownership [odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval), OR = 1.79 (1.18–2.70) for doctor-diagnosed asthma (DDA), OR = 1.72 (1.08–2.78) for doctor diagnosed hay fever (DDHF)] and farming [OR = 1.67 (1.27–2.19) for ever asthma, OR = 1.51 (1.09–2.09) for DDHF]. In multivariate models, tuberculosis (TB) was a significant predictor of atopic symptoms [Hanoi: OR = 3.09 (1.10–8.70) for DDA, Dong Anh: OR = 3.71 (1.40–9.84) for DDA, OR = 4.66 (1.88–11.57) for DDHF].Conclusions:  These findings are contrary to the ‘hygiene hypothesis’. Recent immunologic and epidemiologic studies refute the inverse association between allergy and TB and may be one explanation for the positive association in this study. The positive association with pig ownership and farming may be because of exposures on farms in a developing country that may be different from exposures in farms of developed countries.

Notes: 1. Anaesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent unilateral nodose ganglionectomy or sham operation.2. One week later hindbrain V1 vasopressin binding site density was assessed by in vitro autoradiography with the selective V1 antagonist radiolgand [125I] [d(CH2)5, Sar7]AVP.3. Specific binding was observed in the nodose ganglion, nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), area postrema, and inferior olive. Only binding in the medial subnucleus of the NTS was reduced by ipsilateral nodose ganglionectomy.4. These findings are consistent with V1 vasopressin receptors occurring pre-synaptically on vagal primary viscerosensory afferent fibres.5. Such receptors may be involved in the effect of AVP on blood pressure and/or the baroreflex.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the definitions of cross-sectional variable and topological variable are advanced, and a mathematical model of topology optimization of truss structures with discrete variables including two kinds of variables is developed. The model has considered the coupling relations between cross-sectional variables and topological variables, so that it reflects the innate characteristics of topology optimization as a combinatorial optimization problem. Moreover, problems such as “limit stress” and “singular solution of structural optimization” can be overcome by using this model. The model of topology optimization of truss structures with discrete variables including two kinds of variables is solved directly by using the relative difference quotient algorithm. The computational results are satisfactory and some new topologies and better solutions are obtained.

Notes: Summary The cellular localization of neurons expressing cholecystokinin (CCK) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) mRNAs was analysed in rat ventral mesencephalon using in situ hybridization techniques with both complementary DNA and synthetic oligonucleotide probes. Cell bodies distributed throughout the substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area, interfascicular nucleus, midline raphe nuclei, and central and ventral periaqueductal grey matter were found to contain CCK mRNA or TH mRNA as indicated by high densities of grains overlying the perikarya. The in situ hybridization technique was combined with immunocytochemistry on the same tissue section to localize the peptide or enzyme within its respective mRNA-containing somata. In addition, the presence of TH immunoreactivity was demonstrated within cell bodies labeled for CCK mRNA and immunostaining for CCK was detected within TH mRNA-containing neurons. In the medial geniculate nucleus a strong labeling for CCKmRNA was observed, in spite of the fact that so far no CCK-like immunoreactivity has been demonstrated in perikarya in this nucleus. The specificity of the probes was verified by RNA blot hybridization. These results confirm recent double-labeling immunocytochemical studies and further characterize the coexistence of CCK and TH at the level of their mRNAs as well as their post-translational products in a large population of mesencephalic dopamine neurons known to project to forebrain areas.

Notes: Abstract Two aspects of convection over oceans are discussed and the following conclusions are derived from theoretical considerations. (1) The air layer over the sea will usually convect even when the water surface is ten degrees or more colder than the initial air temperature. (2) An inversion at stratus cloud tops is created by the stratus, and is not a necessary preexisting condition. Such inversions persist after subsidence evaporates the cloud. (3) Radiation heat exchange does not play an essential role in stratus formation or maintenance, and can either heat or cool the cloud. (4) Dry air convection does not erode inversions at the top of the convecting layer. Examples of soundings are discussed. (5) Fogs are most likely to form at sea where the water is coolest, and need no radiation effects to initiate cooling, or a boost from patches of warmer water, to begin convection. (6) Both stratus cloud growth, and the evaporation of clouds by cloud top entrainment, readjust the vertical structure of the air to leave a constant wet-bulb potential temperature with height. These conclusions are supported by, firstly, a convective model which has been developed and which shows that vapor-driven convection over the ocean will proceed with zero or negative heat fluxes, at rates which saturate the lowest layer of the atmosphere in a few hours to altitudes of many tens of meters. Secondly, the availability of condensed moisture at the top of the surface layer cools the warmer entrained overlying dry air parcels so that when they descend they are no warmer than the sea surface temperature, and this induces downward moving plumes. This occurs if the wet-bulb potential temperature of the overlying air is less than the sea surface temperature, even if it is ten degrees C, or more, warmer in actual temperature.
