Notes: Phase-pure epitaxial (Sr1−xCax)CuO2 thin films having the infinite-layer crystal structure were grown on SrTiO3 (100) substrates by low pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition using fluorinated metal-organic precursors. The substrate temperature and reactant gas (O2, H2O) partial pressure are crucial for stabilizing the tetragonal infinite-layer structure. Films with compositions over the range x=0–0.3 can be stabilized. In-plane epitaxy was confirmed by x-ray diffraction φ scan. The films were semiconducting but exhibit resistivity anomalies. The orthorhombic phases of Sr2CuO3 and SrCuO2 were stabilized at 700 °C and 750 °C, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The present paper reviews recent theoretical results, and reports initial experimental results, on the convolution of contra-propagating magnetostatic forward volume waves (MSFVWs), in the form of cw signals or time-limited cw pulses, in an epitaxial yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. Computations of the convolver bilinearity factorF int indicate an efficient convolution process over a wide bandwidth, with values ofF int that are of the same order as, or better than, the reported experimental results for MSW convolution in a YIG cylindrical or plate geometry. The values of Fint determined experimentally are in excellent agreement with theory. These results are of interest to microwave system developers particularly if bandwidths of 1 GHz or larger can be realized in practice. A limiting feature of magnetostatic wave (MSW) convolvers is that the maximum delay time of a delay line that is realizable without excessive insertion loss is in the order of 0.5μs. The advantage of MSW convolvers, of course, lies in their ability to perform signal processing directly at microwave frequencies, and in applications such as electronic warfare the advantageously large bandwidths would mitigate the limitations in delay time.

Notes: Abstract The present paper reviews the propagation characteristics of the three magnetostatic wave-types that can exist in a ferrimagnetic film such as the commonly used epitaxial yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) film, viz., magnetostatic surface waves (MSSWs), magnetostatic forward volume waves (MSFVWs) and magnetostatic backward volume waves (MSBVWs). The pronounced inherent dispersiveness of these waves and methods of controlling or tailoring dispersion are discussed. Other propagation characteristics such as diffraction and propagation loss and the envelope distortion of acw pulse in propagating through such a dispersive medium are briefly described.

Notes: Abstract A case of ganglioneuroblastoma with severe diarrhea and increased secretion of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-mandelic acid (HMMA) is described. Ten months after surgical excision of the tumor, the patient presented with recurrent ganglioneuroblastoma without diarrhea and loss of the biochemical tumor markers. VIP and HMMA should not be used solely for the follow-up of this condition.

Notes: Abstract Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of polyurethane (PU) and unsaturated polyester (UP) were prepared in this study. The mechanical properties of the IPNs were determined to relate to their structure. In order to improve the mechanical properties of the resultant IPNs, it was found that the -OH group present in the UP should be employed to react with some isocyanate-terminated PU prepolymer. Thus, the PU and UP were, in fact, interpenetrated with each other and chemically bonded through a grafting reaction to form the graft-IPN. The tensile strength of the IPNs was increased to a maximum value and then decreased as the PU content increased. The Izod impact strength and fracture energy of the IPNs increased more or less with an increase of the PU content, depending on the types, chain length of polyols used in the PU and the degree of the grafting reaction between PU and UP.

Notes: Abstract Some authors employed the method and technique of differential inequalities to obtain fairly general results concerning the existence and asymptotic behavior, as ɛ→∩+, of the solutions of scalar boundary value problems $$\varepsilon u'' = h(t, y), a〈 t〈 b, y(a, \varepsilon ) = A, y(b, \varepsilon ) = B$$ , In this paper, we extend these results to vector boundary value problems, under analogous stability conditions on the solutionu=u(t) of the reduced equationO=h(t,u). Two types of asymptotic behavior are studied, depending on whether the reduced solutionu(t) has or does not have a continuous first derivative in (a, b) leading to the phenomena of boundary and angular layers.
