Notes: It is shown for the first time that deep defects in single-crystal CdZnTe can be passivated by atomic hydrogen. This treatment can result in a strong enhancement in the photoluminescence intensity of all excitonic transitions. In addition, it is shown that after hydrogenation, the higher-order emission of free exciton in CdZnTe alloys is observed for the first time; the mixed bands can be separated; the LO phonon energy, the binding energy of free exciton, and the concentration of Zn content are also determined. From the experimental results it is inferred that hydrogenation not only improves the sample quality but also provides an excellent opportunity to probe the physical properties of a material.

Notes: The interaction of photoexcited electron–hole plasma with impulsively excited coherent longitudinal optical phonons in GaAs was investigated via time-resolved second-harmonic generation. The dephasing time of coherent LO phonons reduces significantly as photoexcited electron–hole plasma is injected into the near-surface depletion region. The coherent LO-electron and LO-hole coupling modes can both be clearly observed and investigated in real time. The rapid dephasing of the coherent LO-hole coupling mode is attributed to the strong polar phonon-carrier interaction and the overdamped nature of hole plasma. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Previous research demonstrated that exposing gonadectomized adult ferrets to odours in oestrous female bedding induced nuclear Fos-immunoreactivity (Fos-IR; a marker of neuronal activity) in the main as opposed to the accessory olfactory system in a sexually dimorphic fashion, which was further augmented in both sexes by treatment with testosterone propionate. Ferrets are born in an altricial state and presumably use maternal odour cues to locate the nipples until the eyes open after postnatal (P) day 23. We investigated whether maternal odours augment neuronal Fos preferentially in the main versus accessory olfactory system of neonatal male and female ferret kits. Circulating testosterone levels peak in male ferrets on postnatal day P15, and mothers provide maximal anogenital stimulation (AGS) to males at this same age. Therefore, we assessed the ability of maternal odours to augment Fos-IR in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB), the main olfactory bulb (MOB) and other forebrain regions of male and female ferret kits on P15 and investigated whether artificial AGS (provided with a paintbrush) would further enhance any effects of maternal odours. After separation from their mothers for 4 h, groups of male and female kits that were placed for 1.5 h with their anaesthetized mother had significantly more Fos-IR cells in the MOB granule cell layer and in the anterior-cortical amygdala, but not in the AOB cell layer, compared to control kits that were left on the heating pad. Artificial AGS failed to amplify these effects of maternal odours. Maternal odours (with or without concurrent AGS) failed to augment neuronal Fos-IR in medial amygdaloid and hypothalamic regions that are activated in adult ferrets by social odours. In neonatal ferrets of both sexes, as in adults, socially relevant odours are detected by the main olfactory epithelium and initially processed by the MOB and the anterior-cortical amygdala. In neonates, unlike adults, medial amygdaloid and hypothalamic neurones either do not respond to these inputs or respond in a manner that fails to induce Fos expression.

Notes: Abstract This paper is an extension of the earlier one dealing with kyanite in which the best fitting value of the oxygen ligand distance for Cr3+ is adopted to study the spectroscopic properties of Cr3+ ions doped at the two possible Al sites in the other two polymorphs of the aluminosilicate group (Al2O3 · SiO2), namely, andalusite and sillimanite. The superposition model and the crystal field analysis package recently developed for 3d ions doped at arbitrary low symmetry sites in crystals are used to predict energy levels and statevectors within the whole 3d 3 configuration. Then the values of the ground state zerofield splitting for Cr3+ ions at each Al sites in the two crystals are obtained. The splittings of the lower excited states 2 E and 4 T 2 as well as the admixture of 4 T 2 into 2 E have also been predicted. Comparison of our results with the available experimental data enable us to correlate the optical and EPR Spectroscopic properties with the substitutional Cr3+ sites. The conclusion is that in andalusite and sillimanite only the Al sites with nearly-octahedral six-fold coordination seem to be occupied by Cr3+ ions.

Notes: Abstract Using the superposition model in conjunction with our crystal field analysis package recently developed for 3d ions doped at arbitrary low symmetry sites in crystals, the energy levels and statevectors have been predicted within the whole 3d 3 configuration of Cr3+ at the four possible triclinic sites in kyanite (Al2O3∶SiO2). The values of the ground state zero-field splitting for each of the four Al sites are evaluated. The splittings of the lower excited state 2 E as well as the admixture of 4 T 2 state into 2 E have also been determined. The predicted results are compared with the available experimental data on the four possible, but so far not uniquely identified, substitutional Cr3+ sites in kyanite thus enabling correlation of the spectroscopic properties and substitutional sites.

Notes: Summary The CMV (cisplatin, methotrexate, and vinblastine) and M-VAC (methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin) regimens were used to treat 19 patients with advanced transitional-cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urothelial tract. In the CMV group, the partial response rate was 45.5% and the mean response duration was 6.3 months. No complete response was obtained in our series. The median duration of survival was 15.8 and 8.3 months in responders and nonresponders, respectively. The toxic symptoms included one case of sepsis and three cases of renal toxicity. However, nausea and vomiting were experienced by most patients and required the administration of antiemetics. In the M-VAC group, the median duration of survival for responders was longer than that of nonresponders (〉10.2 vs 7.2 months), although the number of patients was too small for this difference to reach statistical significance. The toxic symptoms included one case of sepsis, two cases of renal toxicity, and nausea and vomiting in most patients. Bone metastasis in three patients did not respond to chemotherapy (CMV), a finding that is compatible with the results reported by other investigators. In summary, chemotherapy with the CMV or M-VAC regimen was effective in improving the response rate of patients. However, the duration of response was short, toxicity was severe in some cases, and the efficacy against bone lesions was poor. These problems must be solved to improve the outcome of patients with TCC following chemotherapy with the CMV or M-VAC regimens.
