    Notes: Several gels were produced by addition of low amounts of calcium ions to strongly basic silico-alkaline sols. These gels, previously studied by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and elastic light scattering (ELS), were analysed over a wide range of scattering vectors extending from 8 x 10−4 Å−1 up to 2 x 10−4 Å. The joint use of various scattering techniques allowed us the simultaneous characterisation of coarse, medium and fine structural features of the studied gels. Clear discrepancies between SANS and earlier ELS results were attributed to effects of multiple scattering on light scattering experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the studied gels are composed of aggregates exhibiting a fractal structure within a scale range extending from less than 10 to more than 1000 Å, with the same fractal dimension over the whole scale range. The fractal dimension and so the mechanism of aggregation depend on the initial sol composition and Ca content. The mechanism responsible for gel formation in precursor sols with low calcium concentration ([Ca2+] = 0.3 mol.L−1) is reaction limited cluster-cluster aggregation (RLCA).

    Notes: Abstract The study of silico-calco-alkaline gel is essential to warn against the degradation of concrete due to the alkali-silica reaction. In the laboratory, those gels are simulated by the destabilization of a silico-alkaline sol by calcium ions. Their speed of formation depends on the alkali species. The influence of alkaline ions (Li, Na and K) on the structure of silicate entities in sol and on the gel formation has been studied. The state of polymerization of the silico-alkaline sol was determined by NMR and depends on the alkali species and the molar ratio (Rm = [SiO2]/[A2O] with A = Li, Na or K). It appears that lithium enhances the polymerization. By scattering techniques (SAXS and ELS), the evolution of size and number of scattering particles during gelation can be determined from scattering curves with Guinier approximation. The mechanism of gelation appears as a hierarchic structure composed of several discrete sizes.

    Notes: The growth of the hydrocarbon-rich alga Botryococcus braunii was studied under “air-lift” conditions using batch and continuous cultures. Large variations in the physiological state of B. braunii were achieved in batch cultures and in continuous cultures with various dilution rates. The possible effects of these variations upon hydrocarbons (nature, relative abundance, location, level, productivity) and also on the production of exocellular polysaccharides were examined. The relationships between the physiological state of B. braunii and its hydrocarbon and polysaccharide production were discussed and compared with those generally observed in unicellular algae. The factors giving rise to the transition from high to low productivity stages were considered. To this end we examined, at first, the variations in cell ultrastructure and the resulting degeneration occurring during batch cultures. Afterward the parallel changes in some parameters of the medium (pH, phosphate level) were determined and their possible relationships with B. braunii growth and hydrocarbon production were discussed. The main features of phosphate nutrition in B. braunii and its effects on hydrocarbons were finally examined.
