Summary 1. A study was made of the conditions of preparation of hexaborides by the borothermic reduction of oxides with electron-beam heating in a molybdenum container. 2. It was established that, under the optimum conditions (l h at 1600°C for LaB6, l h at 1850°C for GdB6, l h at 1700°C for YB6), the resulting hexaborides have compositions close to stoichiometric, are free from carbon, and have a particle size 50% smaller than that of hexaborides obtained in a vacuum furnace with a graphite heating element.
