Notes: Abstract The formation of spatially ordered CeO2 particle structures in a thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure and temperatures of 1700–2200 K is studied. The spatial structure of the particles in the plasma is analyzed using laser time-of-flight counting of individual particles. Probe and optical diagnostics are used to determine the parameters of the thermal plasma. The CeO2 particles were positively charged (about 103 electronic charges). The resulting Coulomb interaction parameter for the particles is γ p〉120, which corresponds to a highly nonideal plasma.

Notes: Abstract The thermophoretic interaction of macroparticles and its effect on the formation of ordered structures of macroparticles in plasma was studied. It was shown that coexistence of regions with a chaotic arrangement of particles and regions of ordered structures is typical of a thermal plasma with strong interaction of the macroparticles. Computer simulation of a system of strongly interacting macroparticles, taking account of the thermophoretic interaction of the particles, was performed. The results showed that the thermophoretic attractive forces explain the form of the spatial nonuniformity associated with the grouping of particles in small domains. The experimentally obtained correlation function was very close to the correlation function obtained in the computer simulation.

Notes: Abstract The first observation of the diffraction of optical radiation on ordered structures of macroparticles in a low-temperature thermal plasma was reported. The experiments were conducted in an air thermal plasma at atmospheric pressure with CeO2 particles at temperatures 1800–2200 K. The parameters of the plasma medium were determined using probe and optical diagnostics methods. The binary correlation function of the system of macroparticles was reconstructed from measurements of the structure factor. Simulation of nonideal plasma with the parameters corresponding to experiment was performed by the molecular dynamic method. The computed and experimental correlation functions were compared, and it was noted that they are in good agreement with one another.

Notes: Abstract The results of experimental investigations of a type of dusty plasma which has been least studied—the plasma of solid fuel combustion products—were presented. Experiments to determine the parameters of the plasma of the combustion products of synthetic solid fuels with various compositions together with simultaneous diagnostics of the degree of ordering of the structures of the particles of the dispersed condensed phase were performed. The measurements showed that the charge composition of the plasma of the solid fuels combustion products depends strongly on the easily ionized alkali-metal impurities which are always present in synthetic fuel in one or another amount. An ordered arrangement of the particles of a condensed dispersed phase in structures that form in a boundary region between the high-temperature and condensation zones was observed for samples of aluminum-coated solid fuels with a low content of alkali-metal impurities.

Notes: Free radical dispersion polymerization of styrene in a mixture of 2-propanol and tetrahydrofuran was carried out at 70°C up to high conversions. The influence of the change of the critical chain length on the evolution of the insoluble polymer component was examined. Monomer conversion and the formation of the insoluble polymer component were measured in order to test a mathematical model presented in our previous article. The critical polymer chain length i0, the initiation rate constant kd, and the ratio kp/kt1/2, where kp and kt are propagation and termination rate constants, respectively, have been obtained and compared with those reported in the literature. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: A mathematical model of the basic polymerization kinetic scheme, that involves only initiation, propagation, and termination reactions, has been developed. It was assumed that the propagation and termination rate constants are independent of the chain length. It has been shown that the model predicts the effect of autoacceleration on the formation of the insoluble polymer component. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the mathematical model for description of dispersion radical polymerization, the evolution of the size distribution of growing polystyrene particles has been measured with the Flying Light-Scattering Indicatrix method. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Abstract The results of spectroscopic structural and trace elemental analyses of mineral crystals produced by the soil nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azospirillum brasilense cultivated in a synthetic medium are presented and discussed. The mineral formed is shown to have a structure close to struvite (MgNH4PO4 × 6H2O; ASTM file No. 15-762) with some differences which may be attributed to the presence of isomorphic admixtures of other cations (struvite is known to have a variety of forms). AAS/AES and ion chromatography analyses for a number of biologically important microelements and their role in the formation of the crystal structure, as well as some questions related to biomineralization are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the reaction of 4,4,9-trimethyl-4,9-dihydro-4-silanaphtho[3,2-b]-thiophen-9-one with organometallic compounds, lithium aluminum hydride, sodium borohydride, aniline, and acetyl nitrate. We have obtained secondary and tertiary dihydrosilanaphtho[3,2-b]thiophen-9-ols and 9-phenyliminodihydrosilanaphtho[3,2-b]thiophene. We have established that nitration of dihydrosilanaphthothiophen-9-one occurs at the α position of the thiophene moiety.
