    Notes: Résumé L'origine et la nature probable de la toxicité chez deux espèces de poissons (Fugu etLagocephalus) a été étudiée. Les tissus énumérés dans l'ordre de toxicité décroissant sont les gonades, le foie et les muscles, avec une différence entre les deux sexes, les tissus mâle étant plus toxiques que les tissus femelles. On a éliminé la toxicité par un traitement thermique prolongé et maintenu à 120 °C.

    Notes: Study of the posterior abdominal epidermis in hypophysectomized/thyroidectomized male and female tokays following surgery, and subsequent androgen therapy, indicates that, contrary to a previous model, all aspects of β-gland differentiation are under direct androgenic control. On the other hand, another epidermal specialization, the digital foot-pad, shows a pattern of histogenesis directly comparable to that of β-glands, but is unaffected by androgens. These data are discussed with respect to the evolution of glandular epidermal specializations in gekkonid lizards and the possible role of androgens in modifying the control of cell differentiation in lizard epidermis.

    Notes: In vivo and in vitro experiments on the endocrine relationships of epidermal glands in the tokay Gekko gecko, and the common house gecko Hemidactylus bowringii are reported. The results show that certain aspects of ß-gland differentiation involve a synergistic action between androgens and those hormones responsible for controlling the normal shedding cycle, while other aspects are solely under androgenic control. Pre-anal organ activity appears to be solely under androgenic control.

    Notes: The gross and microscopic anatomy of epidermal glands has been studied in laboratory maintained tokays (Gekko gecko), and house geckos (Hemidactylus bowringii) captured from the wild throughout the year. Annual testicular activity in the house gecko has also been studied. While no significant differences in glandular development at various times have been observed in G. gecko, there are clear-cut annual cycle in H. bowringii. The evolution of epidermal glands in gekkonid lizards is reviewed; the cellular dynamics of β-glands are compared with those of unspecialized epidermis; the possibility that gekkonine epidermal glands respond to quantitative variation in circulating testosterone titers is discussed.

    Notes: Summary The cardiac effects of neurohypophysial hormones in the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica (Temminck and Schlegel), were studied in isolated atrial preparations at room temperatures of 17–20°C, 25–28°C, or 28°C. Arginine vasotocin (AVT), oxytocin (OXY), mesotocin (MSN), and isotocin (ISN) produced dose-related positive chronotropic and inotropic responses. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) was not effective. The effects of ISN on the atrial rate and tension were not affected in the presence of phentolamine or propranolol, which are α and β adrenergic antagonists, respectively. The activity of the eel heart and the effects of neurohypophysial hormones are temperature-dependent. The functional significance of these cardiac effects of neurohypophysial hormones is not known.

    Notes: Summary Thyroidal iodine metabolism in the hypophysectomized snake,Elaphe taeniura, was examined in vivo and in vitro using125I. Hypophysectomy decreased, and TSH increased, both in vivo and in vitro thyroidal accumulation and uptake of radioiodine, and the amount of all labelled substances in the thyroid gland. The operation also altered the distribution of the relative amounts of labelled iodoamino acids in vivo, but not in vitro; nor was there any effect on release of these labelled substances in vitro. In view of the paucity of information available on poikilothermic species, the data are discussed in relation to those of hypothysectomized rats.

    Notes: Abstract The extrathyroidal conversion of thyroxine to triiodothyronine in the snake, Elaphe taeniura, has been determined in vitro. The liver, kidney and pancreas are important organs showing significant 5′-deiodinase activity. The pancreas has a higher conversion rate (18.5±3.58 pmol·min-1·mg protein-1) than other vertebrate tissues that have been studied. The 5′-deiodinase activity is dependent on substrate (thyroxine) concentration, cofactor, i.e. dithioerythritol concentration, temperature, duration of incubation and pH. It is sensitive to iopanoic acid, propylthiouracil, salicylate and propranolol. It is also indicative that the 5′-deiodinase activity increased and decreased, respectively, in snakes with experimentally induced hyper- and hypo-thyroidism. These characteristics suggest that snake 5′-deiodinase is similar to that of mammals, probably of type I category.
