Notes: An oxidation study of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) and rf sputtered hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbide (a-Si1−xCx:H) films was carried out using the infrared (IR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques. a-Si1−xCx:H films with x=0.3, 0.5, and 0.8 were prepared with the PECVD method and significant oxide growth can only be obtained in a-Si0.2C0.8:H film. IR results showed that Si–CH3 bonds provide the necessary porous structure for oxide growth. The oxide quality was found to be poor when compared to oxide obtained from pure silicon. Annealing in nitrogen enhances the porosity of the PECVD films and results in faster oxide growth. For sputtered films, oxide growth can only be observed in film containing Si–CH3 bonds. We are not able to separate the contributions of the Si–H, Si–C, Si–CH3, and the Si dangling bonds to the oxide growth for the PECVD and rf sputtered films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) airbridges coupled to log-periodic and bow-tie planar antennas have been fabricated for mid-infrared radiation detection. The detectors in thermocouple and bolometer modes exhibit a higher electrical responsivity than previously reported metal based antenna-coupled thermal detectors. Measurements made at 10.2 μm wavelength indicate that the linearly polarized antennas have an on-axis cross-polarization ratio of about −4.5 dB and the pattern in the free-space side has a directivity of approximately 5–9 dB. The coupling efficiency is about 15%. Frequency responses for modulated optical signals agree with thermal transport models. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pb0.9La0.1Ti0.975O3 (PLT10) thin films were deposited on SiO2/Si(100) substrates coated with a ZrO2 buffer layer. Studies by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy reveal that the ZrO2 film consists of both tetragonal and monoclinic phases, with the tetragonal phase being the dominant one. The PLT10 film has a perovskite structure and the grains in the film have a rather uniform size of about 50 nm. By using interdigital transducer (IDT) electrodes the in-plane electrical properties, hysteresis loop, and pyroelectric coefficient of the PLT10 film were measured. The dielectric constant and loss factor vary only slightly with frequency in the range 103–106 Hz, with the loss factor being less than 0.01 over the entire range. The leakage current density is lower than 2×10−8 A/cm2 at a bias field of 5 kV/cm. The remnant polarization and coercive field are 12.6 μC/cm2 and 9.93 kV/cm, respectively. The film exhibits a reasonably high pyroelectric coefficient (95 μC/m2 K) after it has been poled by applying 120 V ac at 0.1 Hz across the IDT electrodes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In machine tools, friction exists between the table and the guideways, and in ballscrews. In this paper, feed motor current is measured by a hall effect current sensor. It is used to calculate the motor torque which, in turn, is the frictional torque at steady state. Some frictional phenomena are studied in feed drive systems of a horizontal machining centre, such as the relationship between feedrate and frictional torque, the relationship between frictional torque and table feed position, and the slideway cover effects on frictional torque. Considering all these frictional phenomena, the relationship between the feed force and the feed motor current is obtained. Feed force can be estimated well from the feed motor current considering frictional behaviour. The relationship between the cutting force and the feed motor current is slightly different during up milling and down milling, because y(vertical) directional cutting force changes the frictional force.

Notes: Abstract The use of micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MECC) for the separation of eleven substituted phenols listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants was demonstrated. The effects of the pH and ionic strength of the buffer, and the length of the separation column on resolution were investigated. The retention characteristics of the eleven phenols in MECC are discussed.
