    Notes: We have developed a new compact retarding-potential Mott spin polarimeter and achieved an efficiency of 1.9×10−4 for gold target operating in 25 keV. A novel design of the retarding field electron optics with 0.59 sr collection solid angle for scattered electrons was adopted based on Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-dependent electron scattering process and electron beam ray-tracing calculations. We have combined the new spin polarimeter with an angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometer and measured the spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra and studied the spin-dependent electronic structure of Ni(110) along the Γ¯S¯ line of its surface Brilluoin zone. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Studies were conducted to assess the normal tissue-associated levels of pristane (2,6,10,14-tetramethyl-pentadecane) in Copenhagen rats during ontogeny and adult life and to address whether or not dietary pristane can be adsorbed from the gut and disseminated throughout the body. During the course of this study the possible effects of dietary pristane on chromatin conformation of lymphoid cells were also examined by flow cytometry. The data indicated that 1) pristane crossed the placenta and accumulated in fetal tissues, 2) neonates were exposed to pristane via the colostrum, 3) there were significant increases in the amount of tissue-associated pristane in young adults and subsequent redistribution of the pristane to the muscle and adipose tissues in older rats and 4) after dietary exposure, significantly elevated levels of pristane were associated with the tissues and concomitant changes in chromatin conformation were observed. Collectively, these results suggest that pristane was adsorbed from dietary sources, disseminated to the tissues and exerted a transient, yet marked effect on chromatin of lymphoid cells in rats.

    Notes: Abstract Previous studies have already demonstrated the protective role of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in certain types of cancer. This study reports on the effects of vitamin C on arylamineN-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and DNA adduct formation in a human bladder tumor cell (T24) line. The activity of NAT was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), by assaying for the amounts of acetylated 2-aminofluorene (AF) and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and the remaining amounts of AF and PABA. T24 cells were used for examining NAT activity and carcinogen–DNA adduct formation. The results demonstrated that NAT activity and 2-aminofluorene–DNA adduct formation in T24 cells were inhibited and decreased by vitamin C in a dose-dependent manner. The apparent kinetic parameters (apparent values ofK m and V max) from T24 cells were also determined with and without vitamin C cotreatment. The data also indicated that vitamin C decreased the apparent values of K m and V max from T24 cells.
